Another low miles 73T, buy it?
Hi,
My '73 "RS" was a low miles California clean 73T sepia brown before I bought it. Had a sunroof, no more. Now it's not streetable (but I have a plate on it for testing and rare drives). I sold my '72S Targe a few years back, itching for a street car again... found a 40K mile sepia brown 73T coupe, no sunroof, with CIS (not a fan of CIS). Any idea what these are going for recently? I have seen some clean original cars go for high prices but I dont think the 73T CIS in Brown is too desireable(?). Would be a nice street car though as is and that could work... or Would I be lynched if I made it into a streetable RSR in some other bright color? Any help appreciated!

Bruce Anderson claims a 73T (Targa) in "good" condition is worth about $16,300. That's double what I paid for mine in '91. Personally, I think that's a little more than many sell for.
And, CIS is great in a street car.....

A 40K car that's unmolested and origional would be better than "good" and likely go for considerably more than $16K. What's all the hostility toward Sepia, if everyone has repainted their Sepia car red or silver it's becoming a real collectible.

Hey Mike
I paid $10K for a '73T CIS from New Mexico about 2 1/2 years ago. I did just what you are contemplating: Another RSR Clone Project - Before & After

I hate to see people tearing up perfectly good original cars, even if they are brown. So if you're going to get it, keep it original.
If you desire to make a street-able RS or RSR, I have just the car for you...it's already a bastard! ![]()

You have to be kidding about the 73.5T prices for a good unmolested car! If you see one for 10K I would not hesitate one bit to buy it. That quote by Bruice in the last Excellence market update for longhoods was for the poor to fair condition examples. A good, well maintained 73.5T, Sepia or not can be as high as 30K; however, Bruce claimed in excellent condition, $20,500 is a fair price. I have a 1973.5T that was restored and in great condition and it will not part from my garage for anything less than 20K. Your dreaming............or someone is crazy for selling so low.

So if it's a clean 40K mile '73T coupe with CIS is it worth about $25K??? Not all paint is original. he does not seem to have much documentation unfortunately...

I am not sure why you dislike the cis, but I would bet after driving the car a while you will love it. Very smooth, very driveable.
I passed on buying a 73.5T that had 50,000 miles, original paint on most of the car, and original sport seats a few years ago for $10,000. The seller started discounting the price as I walked out of the door but I felt it was misrepresented at the time and kept walking. It had internal rust issues. Nothing bad at the time but you could see it was on it's way. I wouldn't mind having that car now though given where the prices are going. I am not a fan of cutting these cars. There are fewer on the road every day. If you want a RS clone, buy one that has already been cut.

Mike,
A 73-1/2 T doesn't quite command the premium as an MFI 73 car and won't have near the throttle response you are used to. That being said, they are a great, six-months-only time machine that represents that funky transition period between the longhood and the short. They have the 7R case with 84mm jugs that would be a good basis for "sleeper" mods, e.g. you could swap out the engine for a 3.0 (retaining the original engine in storage, of course) and have a stock-appearing, period-correct concours/street machine that would have a power-to-weight ratio more in keeping with what you are used to. I agree with those above, if one were to build another RSR you would start with a rat because literally everything will be cut away in the build. I say, DO IT! Get yourself some coco mats, a bumper sticker that says "Gas Grass or Ass Nobody Rides For Free" and take a non-stop ride to FUNKYTOWN in your Sepia Brown time machine! This would, of course, require muttinchop sideburns and flared houndstooth trousers but I think Gulick has some in his closet. ![]()

John,
Thanks for the note, got the 'burns growing in... drove the car today, it is just too rough for what he's asking, it needs everything redone like any old 911, will take $10K to get it where I would like it (brakes, all bearings/bushings/cables, undercarriage detailing, shocks, etc etc). It is very solid though and could have 40K miles, best 915 I've driven and very little interior wear. Runs rough, been sitting a lot. Has an interesting ducktail the orig owner got installed new at the dealer in Ohio, I guess he bonded a glass tail to the original metal lid? Does not look like a real RS tail (not thick on the sides). THANKS I'll keep looking unless he'd take 10K then I'd take it.
