installing shift knob

i would like to replace current shift knob(porsche logo type w/ no shift pattern) to original 5spd pattern knob on my '68 911. removal is not a problem. new knob came with two crush sleeves. one loose and one i would have to dig out from top of shaft. do i use both sleeves to install knob? and i am assuming i would want to first place sleeve(s) around shift lever and press new knob into place. or do i place sleeve(s) instide knob then press into place? finally do i want to use an adhesive? i just don't want to turn a 15min job into a 2hr job. TIA.
