shift lever too far forward

In my '71 911 T, I have to really extend my arm to shift into 2nd and 4th gears. I've got the car seat set as forward as possible without crowding my knees. Seems like the gear lever needs to be about an inch further back. Anyone have this problem and tried a fix?

At last, an easy fix. Take off the inspection cover just forward and below the rear seats. You will see a clamp attaching the shift rod to the coupler. First of all, mark where the splined shaft fits into the coupler, then loosen the clamp. You should be able to slide the shaft out of the coupler enough to place your shift lever in the right spot. Tighten the clamp and your done! If the shaft twists, use the mark to realign it.

I have this same problem, I have adjusted the shaft at the knuckle with no improvement. Please elaborate.
PS - I am over 6' tall.

It may not fix the ergonomics of the car. I guess I'm "blessed" with being average built. When I used to wear sports jackets for work, I was able to buy them off the shelf. Oh well.

At best, my suggested adjustment will correct a miss-adjusted shift lever. The height challenged (both tall and short) might benefit a little. You should be able to gain or loss an inch (of shift lever positioning that is) without too much trouble.

Did this adjustment over the weekend and I found a position that seems to work for me. 1st gear (901 box) is down and to the left and just about banging into the seat, but now 2nd and 4th are comfortable.

If anyone else tries this, I have a tip: get someone else to hold the lever while you tighten the bolt on the coupling (or vice versa). If you do it alone, the torque you apply on the bolt tends to knock the lever away from your carefully chosen position.
