That was the most common view at the time. If I remember right the 917 was as much as 100km/h faster than the compition of the day.

Ahh... what? ....
No doubt the 917 could show it's heels to a an early 512S in 1970....but within one year, when the newer 512M's came around, the cars were pretty much equal. Organization and pit logistics ( and bad luck..like many 512's crashing at LeMans)... sealed the fate of the 512... 100 km/H faster ???....just WHERE do people get this kind of BS, you gotta be kidden ??? Long tail 917's could reach maybe 235-245 mph, short tails maybe 215-220 mph. The equivalent Ferreri's weren't that much more behind, either 20 mph slower in straight line speed or maybe close to equal as the Ferrari's got better. If that's what you mean "compared to the competition"....the 512 was the only serious competition the 917 had. True enough, it might be 100 kmH faster than some Carrera's and Corvettes and such !!! - Wil

The Penske/Donahue/Sunoco 512M was *particulary* fast..even among the newer 512M's.
Little factoid...Penske sent the motor to ( of all places) TRACO Engineering on the west coast...they were able to eek out another 50HP. Ferrari wouldn't sell spares to Penske..so they simply fabbed lower control arms, etc, in their own shop. Better, too ! California hot-rodding...dontcha just love it ??? - Wil

As usual, Wil is right - 100 km/hr is crazy (unless that is an avg. that includes breakdowns...).
Vic Elford writes that when he had the only 5L long tail 917 in the race, it could hit 245 mph on the Mulsanne straight. He also notes that he was able to get a 100 yard advantage of the Fcars -- that ain't no 100 km/hr. These are both in his High Perf. driving book.
