Finding more rust...

I have found more cancer, THIS SUX. Ive been treating everything with store bought rust treatments untill I can do some cutting and welding. Has anyone seen any really good products out there to help fight rust before it eats my whole car up. So far it only small bits and pieces, so its not to bad.

YOu might try in Hemmings magazine and look for POR 15. These guys make a kit that works.

POR-15 is the best inhibitor available. It costs $ 36 per quart deivered and is worth it's weight in gold. Be very careful and read the lid resealing procedures or you'll be out $ 36 after one application. I know there online at http://www.por15.com good luck with it.

Hardware store type rust treatments really aren't worth the time it takes to apply them.

POR-15 is definately the best stuff out there. But, if you are going to have to do cutting and welding in of new patches, I would probably not use POR-15 as a temporary stop gap measure, as it will make your cutting and re-welding much more difficult. It is very hard to remove from rusty metal once it is applied, and I'm sure it would be very unfriendly to welding. The car has been rusting for almost 30 years now, I'm sure that a few more months won't hurt it! POR-15 is really best used for surface rust, where the metal is still structurally in sound condition, and you just want to keep it that way, its definately not a substitute for panel replacement.

Not Sure, the car you bought seems to have a multitude of problems, most of which sound like pretty decent $$$ to fix properly (in fact, it sounds like the car does not have much going for it in the positive category). Maybe it makes sense to get what you can for that car, and start over with a different one?!?

I would go with Brian's advice. Also, I would find out what your local laws might be regarding auto sales. It sounds like your car has got its share of problems, and having been through a similar ordeal I can definitely empathize. This will probably make me unpopular, but without vouching for anything, or knowing what the hell I'm talking about, there are laws in most states dealing with sales and warranties (generally based on the Uniform Commercial Code). This is especially true if you bought the car from a dealer or shop. Even if not, there are a variety of remedies available that you might take a look at, including making the seller pay for some of the repairs. Some of these warranties may even apply even if you bought the car "as is". Your state may have a hotline of some sort that can help you for free. Just a thought...

Well, I would agree but; the car really did not cost me anything, I got the money for doing a 2 day setup on some servers so it was kinda free. I cannot sell this car to someone knowing what is wrong, and I dont want to give up because I have the car already. I bought the car as a long term project, it runs good now that I got it back from my mechanic, it drives alright for not having sway bars on it( I have some just need to install them). Basiclly its just a giant model for me to play with. I plan on doing 98% of the work that needs to be done so its really not a matter of cost, just time. I love porsches so time playing with one does not seem like a waste to me. I set a budget of 10,000. bucks for the project and Ive only spent half and I have a drivable good looking ( on the outside ) porsche to drive while I play with it. I plan on doing a web site of the project, Ill keep you informed...
