engine drop question
I'm attempting to drop the engine and leave the tranny in on an 84 Carrera.
In the process of removing the 4 bolts and bolt these two together. In the area of the starter, I'm stuck. Do I need to completely remove the starter, and if so, I'm not sure how. It appears impossible to get an allen wrench up on the upper bolt. If I can leave it, how do I get the top 15mm nut head off on the side w/ the starter? The other 3 are ok. Let me know if you know, and thanks in advance. KB

yes you have to remove starter. Always dropped engine with trans. You need a allen socket to get the starter off.

Kurt, Take all the other stuff off including the clutch lever. Then lower the engine down a little so you can reach and see the allen bolt holding the starter and engine together. When you can see the allen from the top of the motor take a 10mm allen socket and loosen the nut. I left my starter and trans in the car.iI just replaced my clucth in my 85. Maybe I shound have taken out the Trans too. Thanks Mark

Easier if you take the starter out. I'll 3rd that motion to remove both as a unit. Much much easier. I've done it and have spoken with others who have done both.

I remove mine seperately. As mxmark said do a partial drop to reach that top nut. I find it easier to drop seperately because I do my work alone. That and it is such a pain removing the axle bolts. I did reinstall as a unit.
