DIY tuneup completed
Well, it's completed. I adjusted valves, replaced spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, recharged K&N filter, and changed the oil. The only thing left is to get the bottom nut loose from the fuel filter. It won't bulge. The top came off with no problem. I've sprayed it with WD-40 and it is still stubborn. Any Ideas what else I can do to get it off? I really enjoyed adjusting the valves. I will probably do it again in a month or so because I still hear a slight tick on the passenger side. Anyway, when I think of how much money I saved and the experience I received, I have no reservations about going at it again. I'd like to thank everyone on this board for your help. I could not have done it without you.

Billy,
I always use PBBlaster on stuck bolts/nuts and it's never let me down yet. WD40 doesn't impress me at all. I use flare nut wrenches on the fuel filter nuts and be very careful not to lose any seals/o-rings, because they are necessary to prevent leaking.

Billy, good job. Funny, you did exactly the same service as I did - and you have the exact same problem. The lower fuel filter connection stuck.
Here is what I did wrong. I tried to loosen the wrong nut. I thought it was the connection directly to the lower fuel line. Used so much force on it that I almost rounded the nut. Grabbed the whole filter from the top counter holding it on the bottom nut - and voila, it came loose, but not where I initially had struggled but directly below the filter housing. There is a little brass looking crash ring. Thought it odd since the little piece directly below came mounted on the new filter. Well, I screwed it off the new filter and mounted it on the old connection. Not sure if that was the purpose but it worked for me. Good luck and yes, wasn´t it fun adjusting the valves. How did you find the different methods ?

Billy the WD in WD40 stands for "Water Displacement". It is not all that its cracked up to be. Great if you get water under your dizzy cap but... PB Blaster is what you need. Spray, tap it lightly, wait, spray, tap lightly, wait... Patience Weedhopper.

The only method I used was the one illustrated in Wayne's book because I didn't have the additional blades that would fit between the rocker arm and cam lobe. My problem was I didn't want to adjust them to tight so I adjusted more to the loose side. Next time I'll try both to get more experience. I ordered all the parts today and I'll probably do it on my next oil change. Thanks for the tips on the fuel filter. I'll try them tomorrow.
