Changing CV boots

Is there any tips anyone has for changing the rear CV boots. I have 1 torn and thought I would replace them all. Do I need to replace anything in this job other than the grease??

Thanks, Kim

Pretty straight forward, just a snap ring, there is a spring washer under the joint holding pressure on the snap ring so be aware of that, it is messy.

Disassemble them, clean and inspect. If you see blemishes on the race surfaces, consider replacing them. An alternative would be to reverse the shafts. Place them on the other side of the car. This will cause the balls to ride on a new surface, instead of the old worn surface.

I agree with Superman, inspect them well.
Do you know how long the boot has been torn?
I had torn boots on one side and didn't know how long that condition existed. I opted to replace the whole axle with one from our host here.
Sure glad I did. The car is much quieter now and I doubt cleaning and regreasing would've fixed the old one.
You'll need gaskets and might consider replacing the bolts too.

I too just did this job. I had two torn boots on the passenger side axle. I took it all apart inspected the joints and determined the outer races were too worn to re-use. I went with a complete new axle from our host along with gaskets and some extra grease. I also replaced the bolts (at .60 a piece it's cheap insurance) and new schnoor/belleville washers. It went well.

I found the plastic hand brake guides/clips that attach to to the suspension arm was cracked. I ordered up replacement pieces, but I think I may need to disassemble the rear brakes to do it.....dunno.

Good luck!

The search function is your friend here. Warren Hall (Early_S_Man) was always kind enough to share the incredible amount of information and experience he had. See the link below

agree re going whole hog if you have to pull them to replace a boot

replace all boots; clean/inspect/repack with new Quality hp grease

replace Schnorr washers

inspect bolts & moon plates (install moon plates if not present - used are cheap; new they are cheap insurance)
