Clutch Helper Spring - Vs - SSI: DONG~!!
Before I get out the BFH and wail away...
Anyone else run into an interference issue with (new) SSI's interfering with the clutch helper spring operation? I can't be certain how much interference there is - but there is everytime the clutch pedal is depressed and the omega helper spring contracts and then expands to impact the edge of the SSI a 'dong' 'dong' 'dong'. And, although this has a new clutch et al, and new clutch cable and hardware, and totally rebuild pedal assembly, in addition to the dong dong dong, the last inch of clutch pedal travel upwards (upon release) is sometimes hanging...and then can be pulled up with the 'dong' as the helper spring bongs against the SSI. Just me and mine - or - ? Dent in the SSI and make room for the helper spring? Or ? Thanks, Jim

I noticed that in Wayne's 101 Projects book, p37, in the picture in the clutch cable replacement section, you can clearly see that the flange of the heat exhanger has been ground away to clear the helper spring. When I fitted my SSIs I had to grind away about 1/8" of the flange to obtain sufficient clearance, but felt comfortable doing it having seen the picture in Wayne's book.

You can also bend the joint area on the offending SSI downdwards, this will retain to seam strength.

You mean grind the edge lip down like this for clearance around the helper spring so it doesn't bang????

my return spring need just a small adjustment to the SSI.. not sure of other installs. I used a relatively light hammer and a lot of whacks for a cleaner job. I didn't know enough of how a torch and banging would affect the SSI so no torch. I think the raised lip looks pretty clean and gave me nice clearance.

Nice Ronin
Mine doesn't look 'lovely', but now it no longer DONGS. Seems this is not a rare issue at all... Perhaps SSI should be made aware and create a little more room in this area.

I guess you used a grinder. Use a hand file that's a bit round to clean it up while you're involved or it'll look like a bad pimple. SSI mfg has gotta know there is a common clearance problem. that dong was like an itch I had to scratch.. ![]()

Mine hit too. I ended up re-adjusted the clutch cable and was able to eliminate the interferrence. The clutch pedal was easier to depress after the adjustment, which was a nice bonus.
