Ignition Switch Problems

Help! I have noticed for some time now that my ignition switch has been trying to go out on my '82 SC. Well yesterday it finally happened. ..... It started several weeks ago. I would turn the key and nothing would happen. I could turn the key all the way to start, but nothing would happen. I would turn the key several times with no luck and then, like magic, the car would crank right up. Well this went on for a while until yesterday. I must have turned the key 50 times and still nothing. I am pretty sure it is the ignition switch (I recently got a new batery, cap, rotor, coil, checked all of the connections, etc. and the problem still persisted)but my questions are:
Will I have to replace the WHOLE ignition switch (including tumbler) or can I just replace the "switch"(BIG price difference)?
Has anyone performed this procedure before? How difficult is it?

I changed the switch in my '73 911. It's any easy job that basically involves removing the under dash panel, undoing a couple of bolts and that's basically it. You might have some difficulties removing the plastic ring around the switch and the shear bolts holding it in place, but they were loose in my car. It took me 1 hour to do it in my car with A/C. Your year car is slightly different from mine, so it might take more or less time.

If you are concerned about cost, you can buy a used switch. If you want a key matched to the doors, I think you will have to order the tumbler from Porsche. In the meantime, you can always disassemble the switch and use a screw driver on that dissambled switch to start the car until get the right part. Just make sure you have an alarm!!

Thanks for the information Neil. Did you replace the tumbler in your '73? If so, what did you do about the different keys? Does anyone know if there is a way to modify the tumbler to work with your old key (Like re-keying a lock)?
