Strange shifting issue.

I had a bit of a problem starting my car today. Came back from a walk downtown with my fiancee, got in the car and turned the ignition. Nothing. Just a buzz and a click. Tried several times and no success. We were parked at my downtown office parking garage and there was no room to push start the car.

I put the car in 4th and rocked it back and forth as instructed by my mechanic (not sure why) after calling him and tried starting again, still nothing. After several unsuccessful attempts, I decided to call my road service.

Waiting a few minutes for the tow truck to arrive, I decided try again. This time, the starter cranked and the car lurched forward. Took the car out of gear and started the car. I was happy until I released the clutch and the car went in reverse. I wiggled the shifter and it was in neutral so I tried again and the same thing. the car seemed to have been stuck in reverse.

Next thing i did was turn the car off and shifted through all the 5 gears and reverse with the car off and then tried again. this time it was ok. We finally were able to go home. Called my Road Service and cancelled the Distress call. I guess I'll be changing my solenoid(spl).

My next concern is the Shifting/Transmission issue? Hopefully its just a matter of replacing my shift bushings. Called my mechanic and mentioned what had happened and he seems to thing that my shift linkage and may be shift bushings may have been the culprit.

What do you guys think?

Garage
Are you sure you were in 4th when you rocked the car?
Sounds like you may have accicently put it in reverse instead.

Unlike women, a race car is an inanimate object. Therefore it must, eventually, respond to reason.
