I have no reason to believe this is true, but it wouldn't be the only time products are purchased, rebranded and resold to a different market.
At $129.95 for a bottle, this might be one of those products in the "you get what you pay for" category - whatever that means to the beholder. Sherwood |

The can says nothing about being a polish. "revializes and protects the surface of aluminum" is good enough for me. The hard bright post polish look only lasts 2-3 days around here anyway. Do you have any fast tarnishing metals around like polished brass? Left unprotected, this material should tarnish faster than aluminum. -------- I found a brass Zippo. Mothers polish, then Scotch tape 1/2 of one side for a pic later, then Gibbs for 2 minutes on other 1/2, remove tape, then outside in alley protected from rain. It's very salt air dry tonight at 71.7%/60F where the brass is.

I only did one wheel today. It turned hard mirror gloss to satin like the gloss was oiled.

Used Gibbs on a bead blasted fan and coil bracket (mild steel) about 6 weeks ago. Notice the bracket shows no sign of rust and I live in Houston with a fairly humid environment. The fan is looking good too, but the magnesium takes longer to change color I beleive. The housing wasn't beadblasted, only cleaned up with some steel wool. Will probably paint it black next time I take the engine out.

I did one wheel 1/2 w/Gibbs and other 1/2 w/routine on 9/10.
So far no difference short term. "If only looks like it oiled the wheel." ------ that effect is gone. Both sides of wheel look same.

Ron,
Got any pictures? If you get Gibbs treatment on the paint, are there any negative side effects? Thanks, Doug

no pics as no difference.
The Gibbs isn't good for polishing so I did whole wheel with routine polish and then covered 1/2 w/Gibbs. It's really too early to tell as I need at least a month. I'll take a pic of a brass Zippo i did when I did the wheel. There seems to be a dullness issue but I can't really give very much hard info now.

The Gibbs has kept slightly more shine to the eyeball. The camera flash distorts it to greater or less depending on the shoot angle.
I'm interested in polish preservation.. hopefully Gibbs will help. The Zippo was outside inside a concrete block. The wheel is on car in garage so it needs more time for hard info imo.

If you polished and then covered w/Gibbs, didn’t the polish seal the metal?

yes to some extent. The point is that "to some extent" is about a month. If I can get more time with Gibbs then I'm a believer. The only way for me to tell the difference is my way.

Here is the results of Gibbs on a beadblasted fan after about 5 months in Houston weather. Nice even magnesium grey on fan.

thx for posting that - looks like it works better on Mg (which is more porous I think)...

As to the question about Zoop Seal, I have used it on a few bare aluminum pieces on my Harley V-Rod. I applied it last winter and so far, so good. There are a few spots on the wheels that oxidized when the bike was on a trailer in bad weather and a thick accumulation of road salt sat on them for about 24 hours. However, it was much less than it would have been if the raw aluminum had been in contact with the salt.
The only down sides to Zoop Seal is that it is a fairly involved process in applying it, and is expensive. Still, it has saved me, and continues to save me, a lot of polishing work. I am happy with it. |
