Question Floating at 60mph??

When my '69 gets up to cruising speed, it starts to float from side to side. The steering feels tight, but obviously something needs attention. Tie-rods, bushings, alignment?

Check it all. Old bushings will certainly cause some weird handling.

Wayne, I have the same problem, but only when there is a big truck (tractor-trailer) in front or beside me at highway speeds.

I was told in the early porsche this is normal as the air flow dynamics get all screwed up.

Is this incorrect??

Thanks,
Ron Y

If this is normal, is the castor neutral on the car? Could it be adjusted to center itself on the road better.

Too much toe out will exhibit itself in the symptoms you describe. You should also be able to feel it at lower speed. In any event an alignment is in order.

I had the same handling symptoms and the problem vanished with new shocks and TT rods plus an alignment. I checked the stabilizer bar bushings and they looked to be in pretty good shape so I left them alone. Now it rides like it's on rails.

Any light car will be affected by a semi passing. I think your issue is in the alignment.

My SC is setup pretty good and still gets moved by a semi's air stream.

Can you imagine what a Yugo driver goes through?(

Check your ride height too. I had a similar problem and lowering it helped a lot.

How old are your struts, shocks and Tie rods? If they're old, I'd spring for new ones and then have the car re-aligned by a reputable Porsche shop. That should take care of the problem.

(edit, whoops I forgot about the ball joints)

I have a 68 T that does not have the problem as you described. I replaced the bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints, struts, strut mount & added a strut brace & it handles fine. Check all the above.
