Bob: The paint number represents Copper Brown Metallic.

I also see a Glasurit code of: PORSCHE BRAUN KUPFER DIAMANT MET Color code: 443 Aux color code: Z6 Years: 1976-1980

Can someone confirm the translation? Thanks.

Thanks Rick, I understand from other posts that 3 paint companies including Glasurit supplied paint to Porsche. Doesn't the last digit indicate the paint supplier??

Bob:

I have the same car and had the same problem. Most of the common paint store computers show 436 as Copper Brown, but that formula and the name are not correct - comes out wat too dark. I then found an old paint chip book that called 436 (more correctly I think) Sirah Daimond Metallic (or the German equivalent) In the end I had my local body shop just match my car and they did a great job. I can put you in touch with them if you want your paint shop to find out what they started with.

Thanks Ron, I'm the paint shop. Do all my own body/paint work. I am planning on using Glasurit products. Please forward any information you have, much appreciated.

Bob,

Paint code 436 only appears once in the USA version of the 1972 - 83 factory service manual ... it is listed as a 1976 metallic color [also applicable to 1977 models] 436 Diamond Sarah.

1972 paint tag format: XXX - Y - Z

where:

XXX = 3-digit paint code for Porsche AG.

Y = place of paint application ... 9 = Porsche factory, 8 = ??? perhaps Karmann or other coach factory

Z = paint mfr,

1 is for Lesonal
2 is for Glasurit
3 is for Herberts

Thank you Warren; I think I saw your response to a similar request in an earlier post. Much appreciated. Do you know if major paint suppliers (Glasurit) still have color chips available??

Bob,

It shows up in the Glasurit. com online search as Sahara Diamant Metallic for 1976 - 77 Porsche ... guess there were a few letters left out of the USA translation!

Glasurit shows it as a 'red' class paint. Is it by any chance close to our traditional/classic Candy Apple Red?

Bob & Warren:

Bob, following up on my previous reply, I tried to get some info from my painter but he won't be back until Monday. I'll let you know if he kept any records of how he matched my car.

Warren, I appreciated seeing the results of your research. I went through this a few months back and found people who called 436 a lot of different names and confused it with other colors like Sienna Red and Copper Brown. I know where there is a paint shop that has the proper chip in an old book but don't recall which mfg it was. I can check back with them if it would be of value to anyone. The spelling "Sahara" makes a lot more sense than Sarah Diamond - I didn't think Porsche would honor a writer with a special paint name.

I've attached a photo of my car - it was supposedly repainted with "factory" paint in the mid-90's and I'm sure it was an exact match.

Bumping this very, very old thread to the top. I got confirmation from the factory that my '79 930 is 436-9-3, Sienna Brown Metallic. Paint manufacturer is Herbold, since purchased by BASF, same patent company as Glasurit and Lesonal now.

As you know, the Glasurit book shows this as Sahara Diamond Metallic. Since my car has adjust no remnants of the color left, I cannot say with certainty whether Sienna Brown in Herbold and Sahara Diamond are the, same color. I know the aforementioned Copper Brown is not the same.

Now to find a vintage Herbold book.

Paint

Wow,
This post is an oldie Kenik. My car was painted in '08 using PPG base/clear. I still have a little left for touch ups. PPG book shows Sahara diamond metallic under that code number 436. I took off the gas filler cover and the paint guy. Matched it exactly as I believe. I have tried unsuccessfully to get a color chip from any pelican, and I understand that it was a two year color only. Haven't seen another like it. If you send me your e-mail address, I'll send along pics and PPG paint mix code for 436. Best, Bob

Funny, I found it in the Glasurit book (436) under Sahara diamond metallic, as well. Given I was able to confirm that Herbol read the original paint manufacturer, was unsure how they matched up. My interest in reviving this thread was to confirm if Sahara and Sienna are the same color. Email me at my user name at gmail.

Thanks!!!

I also have a '77 Targa painted this color. It was repainted sometime in the 1990s and it was an excellent match to the original paint I've found on the car.

77 Targa

Kenik,
Car was painted base/clear in '08. Color sanded and buffed. Has held up well over 6 years. Very durable paint. Also, very expensive. 3 quarts mixed to 436 code:$500.00. That was over 8 years ago. Red pigmented paint is the most expensive.

I'm not sure where you got manufacturer Herbold from the paint code.
the "3" is supposed to be "Herberts", also known as "H" in the pre 1972 codes.
There is a manufacturer "4" and I suspect it may be "Herbol" , also known as "HL" in the pre 1972 codes.

Factory response to color inquiry - Herbol specifically called out:
