identifying carpet

i need help in determining which carpet material i have in my '68 911L. the carpet is charcoal in color and very "flat". it is not the square weave type material but rather a black/charcoal marble smoothe material. i know the description is lame but that's what it looks like. i beleive it is original to the car. i need to replace the back seatrest and will have to call around w the proper identification. tia.

Your car came with an interior code that you could probably find out from one of the older Porsche owners. For instance, MY 89 has code AB, Black-Partial letter in the owners manual if your lucky enough to still have it.

Bob, for 911's built between 1967 & 1972/73 there were basically just two types of original fitment interior carpet - 'Perlon' (which was usually fitted to lower spec models like the T) & velour (which was more usually fitted to later L models as well as E's & S's). The description you use -
"black/grey marble & very flat" sounds like Perlon -it is a felt-like material which is quite thin (only about 5-6mm thick when new) & quite'cheap' looking! The best way to determine what type of carpets you've got (assuming they're still the original carpets)
is to compare them to the carpet fitted in the front luggage compartment. All these cars had Perlon fitted here as standard. If this turns out to match the carpets fitted inside the car then this might give you a source of replacement material for your seatbacks.
Hope this helps.
