time for new clutch?

BMW M3 is goading me into a race. Ignore him for two lights (my car is still warming up). Third light I run it up to 3K rpm's and ease the clutch out while adding gas (did not dump the clutch). Thought at first I was spinning the tires but quickly figured out it was the clutch slipping. First time this has happened. Time for a new clutch? Has about 50k mi on it. Could it be a cable adjustment issue (Had the engine / trans out a month ago).

What year is it? Don't they have hydraulic system instead of cables?

On my old Saab was the slave cylinder in the tranny.

Could be your clutch, could be hydraulics

not until the G-50 trans. do they have hydraulic clutches. Try that same start again but use 2nd gear and not so much power. With the clutch out and the rpm around 1000, nail the throttle and see if you detect any slippage, or smell clutch. If you do than yes you need a new clutch disk or pressure plate. Because there a pain in the azz, change them both along with all the other parts in the Pelican super clutch kit sold right here.
My guess in the heat of the battle, you might have had your foot resting on the clutch while looking at that BMW in the rear view mirror.

The clutch should be good for more that 4 times that many miles, unless it's a rubber centered clutch.

+1 on the dragging your baby out of second. that will tell yeah.

May be a good idea to check for proper settings below just to make sure before the test.

You'll need a helper to press the clutch in for proper measurements

Will check the linkage. Don't think I had my foot on the clutch. It was all the way out. Had to lift after a couple seconds as RPM's were approaching 7k. Stunk up the car pretty bad. Had a launch a week or so earlier that was nice. Felt like the front wheels were close to rising.

Will try the 2nd gear test above

Oh. Man. You did not volunteer that info.

Smokey burnouts are for pimply faced kids driving Mustangs.

would rather smoke the tires than the clutch (thus my post). What's the point of having a sports car if you don't see what it can do once in a while. Hope I am never too old for a hole shot.

Clutch would be cheaper and easier to repair than the damage you're going to do attempting to "smoke the tires."

I am all for sporty driving if that's what you want to do, but you should learn more about the GT roadster that is the 911. It is truly an automotive icon, and it is not designed for drag racing. New CV joints can set you back 400-500, and a rebuilt transaxle 5-6K, assuming you don't break the original too bad. Miss a shift too, and your 911 might as well be scrapped.

I hear ya. It was not my intention to do a big burnout. I know well the weakness of the 915 trans. But I could not resist a little fun. Having just rebuilt the engine with a little extra "while you are in there" it's fun to see how it compares to a more modern sports car. I purposely did not pop the clutch but eased it out with the goal of WOT and clutch out ASAP.

first time the clutch has ever slipped.

Chris
