How much play in shift lever while in gear

My shifter seems to have a lot of play while in gears 1st thru 4th. while in fifth the shift lever has no play at all. Should 1,2,3 and 4 have any play at all while driving. Is this a sign that new bushings are in order.
Car is '75 911 w/3 litre, 5 speed trans.

Thanks, Dennis.

You may also have play in 5th but because of the metal shifter tang that holds on the extension that protrudes from the plate it seems solid. Try picking up the boot to see how the metal engages as it is put in 5th to see if thats the case.?

Was the shift coupler/bushings ever replaced? The cup at the bottom of the shifter could also be worn as well as the bushing that holds the shift rod. All are easy fixes.
good luck
Hope it helps

My SC 5 speed with 55,000 miles has about 1" of slop in all directions when in any gear. How does this compare to your shifter?
