Question early Fuchs/late Fuchs

I have a 71 911T Targa with S austattung. It has 2 flat six wheels on the front and two deep six wheels on the rear.

Which wheel is correct?

Is it a problem to have two different wheels on this car?

Thanks in advance!

Tom

There was a discussion on deep 6's in the past two weeks that will probably answer your question, I would do a search. I believe somewhere in '71 the flat 6's became available. Deep 6's were an option on the T prior to the flat 6's. I am curious what deep 6's on the back and flat 6's on the front look like. Can you post a pic?

BTW it is tradition here to introduce yourself and post pics of your car.

Scott - Thanks for the heads up on the tradition! I'm a newcomer to this site, having become aware of it during the recent Portland Parade.
I bought the 71 911T in Germany in 1976. I was stationed there from 73 to 78. Prior to the 71, I had a 68 soft window Targa purchased from a neighbor. It was my learner Porsche, i.e., I learned where rust begins and ends as I watched the car disappear before my very eyes. I saved the wheels and tires and used them for autocrossing. I assume that somewhere along the line I got the wheels mixed up, sold the remains of the 68 to a masochistic refurbisher, and sent the 71 home (1st to SanAntonio, then to Tacoma) with a mixed set of wheels. Somehow I wasn't aware of this until it was pointed out to me abouit three years ago at a PNWR event.

There is a picture on the Pelican 2006 parade photos #97 on page 1
I will try to post it and others.

Thanks very much for the info!

Tom

Tom,

Whether deep sixes or flat sixes would be correct is entirely dependant on the production date for your car. Switchover to flat sixes occured the last week of March, 1971. It is highly likely that yours were added later, either added by a dealer or bought used to replace standard steel wheels, and not a factory option.

Warren,
I Bought the car from the original owner, a neighbor, and I believe all four wheels were identical at that time. Ichecked in the trunk and the spare is a deep six with the (probably) original Michelin XWX. I have had the car for thirty years and don't think any wheels were changed with the exception of the autocrossing thing mentioned earlier. So that leaves me with 3 deep sixes, which I'm guessing are original to the car, and 2 flat sixes which may have come from my rusted out 68. But that is only logical if the 68 which I bought from a different neighbor in 73 or 74 could have had replacements for the steel wheels as you suggest.

Tom,

You could get a little more information about your wheels by checking the date codes on them. Do the flat 6" wheels have a three prong center cap? If so those would be an early date flat 6" wheel and have greater value over the later ring style center cap type wheels.

That is cool you are such a long term owner of your car.
