Starting Issues...

Hello,

I posted awhile back regarding issues starting when car is hot. (911SC).

At first, I suspected the starter solenoid, then my ignition switch(key) but later after charging the battery, the starting problem is gone.

I've been using the trickle charger at least once a week to maintain the battery and haven't had any starting issues until yesterday.

Yesterday i guess everyone decided to drive to work and the roads were packed. stop and go traffic all the way home for 15 miles in 97deg. weather. The car got pretty hot. At this point, i was already anticipating pulling over and letting the car cool of but thought of not being able to start incase the solenoid acted up. So, i sweated it out (no AC) and made it home with the car temp at the 3/4 mark. Openned the engine bay to let the car cool and tried to start up about an hour later. The car just wouldn't turn over. The starter wasn't engaging. I hooked up my battery charger set to 10 amps and waited about 30 minutes . The car started, no problem.

It seem my battery is ok but for some reason, when the car gets hot specially around the starter area, I have trouble starting.
Could this be that the heat from the exchangers is affecting my starter solenoid? I was thinking about making a heat shield betwen the exchanger and starter.

Some starter motor armatures are a tight fit in the housing and thus stick when it gets hot. Try the heat shield. Some owners smack the housing with a hammer with some success. Or use another starter.

"The starter wasn't engaging."
It doesn't take much voltage for the solenoid to "click". Assuming the battery is okay (don't assume too much), check the charging system (+14 volts at the battery posts, running) and battery connections, including the ground cables (especially at the rear - gearbox mount).
