Differential shatters 901 71 911e 'HELP'

Hi Guys,

Well was down in Washington in my new 911e on the weekend and the differential decided to fail (tran was just rebuilt in Feb) at 120 mph.

I need some help on what I should do. Targa Performance in North Van wants about 3k CAD to find an old 901 and swap in my old parts. They quoted a brad new dif at like 3/4k plus labour... ????

Any suggestions about upgrades or options?

Thanks,
Adam

Find a used one on the parts 4 sale forum for a few hundred. Anchraft has one right now, but I don't know what year your car is. I think hers is rebuilt and for something like 900 US. I could be wrong. Take a looksee. Also, someone here will tell you the name of a cat somewhere on the Eastern seaboard who does these all day and doesn't charge anywhere near that kind of money.

OK, I opened up my eyes and see you have a '71. You need a 911/01 trans, just what she has. FS: 1971 911/01-901 renewed tranny zero miles
It's a little more than what I thought, but she's a real nice and honest person. The people she mentions that did the work are competent, maybe not my first choice for doing business with. but, you won't be doing business with them anyway.

Adam-
Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Did you gearbox have the simplified differential fix installed? From the sounds of it, it may not have been done. If you are not familiar with the issue, do a search for "simplified differential." The remedy is an essential upgrade to the 911 gearbox, and is easy and inexpensive to do.

As Scott says, this is an absolutely inevitable failure on almost all late 901 and 911 trans.

Its just a matter of when...

The cure comes from factory parts, which are often obtained by stripping a 914 tranny.

Kind regards
David

New parts for the upgrade are also available from Porsche, and are reasonable in price.

I’m sorry to see that. In my experience I suspect not much is salvageable. Your best bet is to find another type 911 (’70-’71) transmission and bring it up to standard. Needless to say that should include the update to the simplified differential.

I wonder what better way there is to find those not up-dated? Too many get lost to this problem.

Best,
Grady
