Car being a lil Bi%^& in the cold.
Is there a reason why my tranny is so difficult to shift when cold (915)? For example, refusing to go into gear... especially 2nd. When stopping I have to feel for 1st gear, or else it grinds. Winter weather makes it even worse. When the car warms up the thing is a lot better (I won't say "fine" because it still has its own personality). I have replaced the bushings and have installed solid mounts. What else do you guys think I should check/do?
Maybe a clutch adjustment and new tranny fluid? Also, how well does a gate shifter fix things? I can't imagine how nice it would be for 1st and 2nd to be as solid as 5th and reverse. Last edited by Mr.Puff; 02-13-2008 at 01:46 PM.. |

If you are in cali I would think it never gets that cold.
Switch to swepco although it will still be balky when it is dead cold.

I just had a bunch of work done to fix the shifting on my car. It needed to be babied going into 2nd always, but was really acting like a pig in all gears when the weather got cold. When the mechanic got in the car, he immediately figured the clutch was the culprit because the pedal was so stiff. Adjustment wasn't helping much, so I had him drop the engine and "go for it." Turns our whoever did the clutch job last time failed to lubricate the throwout bearing, it was totally dry. This had led to clutch not properly disengaging, which beats up the clutch, and the synchros, etc. Now I have new clutch kit, new synchro rings, dogs and sliders and it shifts like butter. Spendy but oh so sweet.

Just had a factory Short Shift kit replace a hacked up OEM shifter that was shortened to make it a ghetto shorter shifter (not short throw). The retard PO JB welded the reverse lock out. I can now actually shift from 5th to 4th without grinding it. 2nd was a Biotch too
My Clutch had so much play the wrench was shocked. he adjusted it and now it shifts 110% better. I had a 944 and shifted so smoothly, I just assumed 911 shifted really rough now I see how a real 911 is suppose to run.

Nope, no grinding in reverse. However, my clutch has like 1 foot of play and then 2 inches of the friction zone... I'm thinking I need to have that fixed. Also, the PO had the tranny plugs tightened so f*&^ing hard that I can't get them off. It was the same for the crank case drain plug, there was no aluminum washer, I had to use a hydraulic jack to get it off
![]() Cali gets down in the 30's during the winter (in my area). It stays in the 40's and 50's during the day. Very uncomfortable because it's windy too. I'll do the clutch adjustment and new fluid. After that it might be time for a gate or a drop. |
