Tires and wheel options for 1972 narrow body

I have just spent all day on tires and wheels for my 1972 narrow body hot rod. I have 6 inch Fuchs but I would also like to go sevens in the rear. I can’t seem to find the response that combination

I am doing full suspension, so I can set ride height , torsion bar stiffness etc.

The car currently is at stock height with pirelli CN 36s 185 70 15s . I was thinking about going to a larger size in the back of that tire but am completely open

Car will only be driven in the dry and mostly weekend drives, no track time, etc but maybe some canyon runs

Thanks in advance ,

7R Fuchs is the better solution.

Regular 7" Fuchs (ET 23,3mm) should work as well.

195 wide is the safe bet

205 wide tires should also work with a bit of care.

Personally I'll try 205 on regular 7" for my build when ready

Thanks. What aspect ratio are you going with , and are you going with 7s on all four? Tire brand? Staggered sizes?

I run 205/50's with 15x7 rims, stock et. Check how low my car is and I have zero problems. I do run max camber in front along with 1/4" spacers. Based on what I have read, if one shaves the fenders, runs the perfect ride height along with max camber front and rear, one could run 225/45's on 15's. There are few on here that have. Like stated, 7R rims might work best.

Had the same question. Went with the Dunlop’s. They look a bit small on the car but I’ll never rub the tires.

You can use either 6ET36 or 7ET23.3, these wheels come in 15 and 16 and can be used at either end of the car. Only restriction is to keep the rear tires under 25" as a 25" 215/60 x15 on a 7ET23.3 will burn the paint a few inches above the lips.

Here's 1 possible setup, There are others using different size or type tires. This one is a square setup, when going staggered you will want to watch the tire heights. You will find that it can be frustrating to get a good staggered match w/ most tire lines.

I plan to use 4 of the same so I can rotate them

Most tires come in 205/50 so that's probably what I'll end up having to use, even though I'd prefer a bit taller sidewall. The Advan A048 used to come in 60 profile I think, but those have been discontinued it seems

Personally I'll get an R compound tire. Kumho, Toyo, Yokohama, Pirelli offer these for example

Here's my narrow body 70T, lowered to Euro ride height, wearing regular 15x7s with P6000 N2 in 195/65 all around. Apologies for photo quality.

A 205/60 or 195/65 are close to the same height as your current tires. These fit will on your current 15x6 wheels. However, they are getting harder to find. There are still options. I don't run super sticky tires on the street. Just a good sport all season works well. The early cars are light enough they are not really stressing tires like a more modern, heavier car. YMMV.

The 15x7 wheel usually fits well. You can fit a 225/50 on 15x7. But, You will need to increase rear camber to clear the lips. Watch out for too low a ride height. In this case you can blister the paint up higher in the wheel well under full compression. A taller ride height or stiffer torsion bar is the only way to help here.

A 205/50 is just too small diameter IMO unless you are only running the track and want the gearing advantage. It also takes away underbody clearance on the street. Tread carefully.

Superlites look great on older 911's.

I understand that the P6000 N2 may be NLA? Tire Rack no longer carries them. Maybe time for a separate thread.
