Tranny mount bolt hole stripped...help!

I’ve owned the car for a year now, and just noticed while under the car one of the 2 Bolts is missing in the Tranny mount. So I go down to the local auto parts store and find the proper metric bolt, I return home and attempt to put it in and notice it isn’t getting tight. Took the bolt out and noticed some thread shavings. Looks like the PO or a mechanic stripped it out. AARG!

It looks like the tranny mount has to come off or drop the engine to re-tap it. Or is there another way to repair this? I'm just upset a mounting hole is stripped out that’s part of the chassis and im kind of intimidated by re-taping things. Yes i know.....NEWB! lol

TIA
-Jeff

I'm sorry to hear that. You've got to love mechanics with pneumatic tools...

Depending on how bad that current hole is stripped, one way to fix it (and still use the original bolt) is to buy a hella coil kit. I've used them in the past and have always had a good experience with them. Very simple to install. Not as good as the original, but a close second.

Here's a good article that should help:

Repair of Damaged Internal Threads.

Timeserts are stronger (and more expensive) than Heli-Coils. Although either will work for this application, using Timeserts will probably allow you to sleep better at night. Here is an article about using a Timesert for spark plug thread repair that might help.

I've come across a few (3-4?) cars with the same issue.
To fix:
Support the transmission with a jack stand
Unbolt the transmission crossmember and remove it from the transmission.
Timesert the hole (12x1.5 I think).
Clean up the old transmission bolts or replace if too munged.

Tip: When installing the transmission bolts, loosen the 4 crossmember nuts (M8 studs with "13mm" nuts) so the crossmember is free to move around while you get the transmission bolts threaded.
