C2 964 Engine Update
I know that C2 (964, 3.6l) engines from 1989-1991 needed to have cylinder and head work done under Porsche's warranty program. Does
anyone know what the serial numbers were of the engines that we recalled for this work? Can anyone be specific with which engines (from what manufacure year and month) needed it? Thanks in advance. Jack...
You're in luck. I was just reading about this in the Feb '00 Excellence. According to Bruce Anderson's Porsche Market Update, "Cars built in 1989, 1990, and 1991 (up to engine number 62M 06836, M64.01 for manual transmission cars and 62M 52757, M64.02 for Tiptronic cars) had engines susceptible to cylinder-to-cylinder head sealing problems. During the 1991 model year Porsche fitted the 964 engine with modified cylinders and cylinder head gaskets. On earlier engines without the gaskets, some leakage may occur there. While these cars were on warranty, Porsche updated any that were leaking enough to be "wet to the touch." " He goes on to describe some other problems with the 964 engine. It may be worth picking up a back issue. |

Thank you. The value of this board is once again confirmed. And I am in luck more ways than one: the engine I'm buying is a 1992 with a 62N... serial number. I hope that means I can safely assume that the head-sealing problem is one headache I won't have to look forward to.
Of course, all the other 964 shortcomings (and strengths, to be fair) are on my plate, now. I'll try and locate a reprint of that article. ------------------ --------------- Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/Jalopy.html |
