How do you like your M&K? (after some time has passed)

I have seen many, many threads praising M&K mufflers, but I'm wondering how folks feel about them after a year or two has passed. Do you still enjoy the sound as much as the day you installed it? Has the novelty worn off?

I'm planning to do an exhaust upgrade to my '89 next year (Fabspeed Pre-muff, M&K 1-in-1-out, SW Chip), but I've never had an aftermarket sport muffler on any of my Porsches and I don't want to find myself regretting the decision a year later.

Thanks in advance for your commentary!!

}{arlequin 10-03-2006 12:42 PM

it's a bit louder than whatever "sport" combo you get from the store, but it's a nice loud...

what's not to like? superior materials, welds, and support. custom to your liking. light as hell. you can request it quieter, or just add some extra sound pads to the rear. you cannot take out the weight out of the other muffs...

rfuerst911sc 10-03-2006 01:21 PM

I've lived with my 2 in 2 out since 11/13/04 and I still love it. I did purchase from M&K the tailpipe "cap" to close off the passenger side tailpipe for everyday use because for me it's a little too loud for everyday use but great for autocross or DE when uncapped. I also have SSI's if that matters. For the quality, performance, sound and weight savings you can't beat these mufflers.

bbthomson 10-03-2006 01:33 PM

I love ths sound of my 2 in 2 out muffler. I smile everytime I hear it. When not driving the car I crave the sound the car makes at High RPM's. I just need to get more miles on my car and I would be extremely happy.

I agree with everyone else. Super quality, service and very lightweight.

I like mine every morning when I start it. A Ferrari guy told me it sounded really good. I have fabspeed euro and sw chip. r.t.

minoclan 10-03-2006 02:55 PM

After six months I still love my 2-in/ 2-out. I have not met one person who doesn't like the sound. What I like most is that Ben is willing to make any modification that I want on the exhaust that is already on the car.

jbrinkley 10-03-2006 03:00 PM

that 6000 rpm wail is my crack pipe

Noney 10-03-2006 03:07 PM

Agree with all of the above. No regrets.

An added bonus is that after about a year or so (depending on how much you drive the car), the muffler will begin to "cure" and the sound becomes slightly more mellow. Not quieter, but mellower. The only way I can describe it is that any "brittleness" that existed when the muffler was first installed is now gone and the sound is very rich and pleasing. Others here have commented on this as well, although I can't seem to find an explanation for it.

Any ideas Ben.....?

joetiii 10-03-2006 03:18 PM

I like the gurgle of the 2 in 2 out Sport at idle and the backpressure on deceleration.

skinnerd 10-03-2006 03:26 PM

I have one of the GT3 style variants....and it is actually almost too quiet.
At the track everyone comments how quiet it is.
They do say it sounds good though.

I'm almost interested in finding out how I can make it a bit louder.......

Really like the light weight, fit, finish and sound.
Just louder next time.:D

Facey 10-03-2006 03:41 PM

at every track event i've been to in my car (2), i have always been told by many (most) that my car is the best sounding there.

I am actually the opposite of everyone else here.
i really liked the sound of my 3L with SSI's and a hollow flowmaster.

i expected the same thing but more with my 3.5L B&B's and M&K dualy...... the entrie thing was different....much "nastier", but after about 5 days... my opinion changed.

that is also the first time my engine saw more then 5k, and i believe "blew" some of the insulation out. its seriosuly loud.... but i was told it would be.

it looks great, it weighs very little, and i can't imagine a better sounding engine......

Any 1 in 2 Out with Stock Exchangers ?

stevej37 10-03-2006 04:12 PM

I have the 1 in 1 out with cat by-pass on my SC. Whenever I start it in the garage, it startles me with the raspy loudness! On the open road it sounds great and seems to pull harder throughout the rpms...compared to the stock muffler.

No ***** ! I love the sound of mine - drove it 2.5 hours to the track, several hours on and then drove it home. The best part was listening to the sound of McKenna shifting from 3rd to 4th on the main straight - my first time hearing it on the track! Most of the time the radio is off, I just love the sound of the 911 w/M&K.

carrue529 10-03-2006 04:42 PM

Still love the sound

After debating for over a year on whether to go 1 out or 2 out, I finally installed a 1 in 2 out on my Carrera this past weekend. The muffler is not as loud as I expected - I've got no sound padding at all in the back seat or engine compartment and while I still hear more 'motor' than exhaust, I absolutely love it. Once the revs climb, that raspy wail is pure sex. I am falling in love all over again with the sound of this motor.

CabMike 10-03-2006 05:23 PM

I have a 1 in 2 out with a cat bypass and I love it!! The sound is fantastic with the top down and you don't get any low pitched drone at normal highway speed like some other mufflers do.

I'm undecided on my 1 in 1 out. I love the weight of it but after about a month on the car, I'm growing tired of the loudness. The sound makes me wonder if I have an exhaust leak. I plan on pulling off the cat bypass and muffler to look for evidence of a leak. If I can't find a leak, the stock muffler may go back on.

JP911 10-03-2006 05:32 PM

I've got a 2-in, 1-out on 993 heat exchangers and the sound is intoxicating; rumbles like a big V8 at idle and sounds like a modern Porsche race car engine when pushed. Like many, I've received numerous compliments on the sound (on the street, AX, and track). My only negative comment comes from my wife who thinks it's too loud. The build quality and weight are both big bonuses.

nigel911 10-03-2006 06:42 PM

My 2-in-1 out sounded awesome and was top quality - just a little too loud for my standard 72. Less than 200 miles later I ordered a OE Dansk to replace it - I'm very fussy though.

Super_Dave_D 10-03-2006 08:27 PM

3 months now for my 1/1 M&K and I still dont use the radio

Mine is a one-off 2 in 2 out with a centered pair of outlets, and the low end and bass out of this thing at idle and low revs shocked me. It's scary impressive. You feel it in your chest. I was checking my oil at my local gas station at the beginning of the 110 freeway in Pasadena on Saturday and the other guys there were all looking at it going WTF? I think they were wondering how such a small little white car could sound so ominous and mean. Then I got back on the freeway across from the gas station and wound it up to 7,200rpm, and they got to hear the other end of the spectrum. A chorus of valkyries doesn't sound this breathtaking. So beautiful.

Has anyone dyno'd one of these in a before and after comparo?

Cheers

KCinBR 10-04-2006 02:21 AM

I 've had my M&K 1/1 since about Feb. of this year and still love it.
The sound is not intrusive in the car but outside it really screams, with a nice mellow tone.
If you drive it hard .....it screams loudly, however if you drive it easy it purrrrrrs.
I'm an old guy who has come to appreciate a nice quite machine while driving, but I really like the sound of the M&K. And I do drive my 911, about 10 to 12K miles per year so it's not a garage queen that is take out only for special occasions.

keep the change...............KC SmileWavy

several have and they posted the results on this BBS. Do a search you will find them.. Mostly on carrera cars is the info I have seen

cubby911T 10-04-2006 04:23 AM

Wow, just checked back on this thread and it's great to see so many responses! Thanks everyone! Sounds like nearly unanimous praise for M&K, which bolsters my confidence in choosing that product for my exhaust upgrade.

WPOZZZ 10-04-2006 05:11 AM

Got a question on the install of a 2/2. My mechanic installed a new 2/2 M&K on a a Carrera 3.2 the other day and when it was started, lots of the stuffing came out of the muffler. Has that happened to anyone?

}{arlequin 10-04-2006 05:33 AM

it's festive, isn't it? :D

Umm, to say the least! I was told when it was started up, it shot that fiberglass wadding all over the place and it was burning or something. Too bad I missed it! :p

we use to include that feature but stopped several months ago as it was burning out to fast. None of the new models get that festive stuff except if you like we can for the holidays:D

k9handler 10-04-2006 06:50 AM

Mine was festive...ha ha great sight to see! As someone posted above the sound does get better with age, hard to explain though. At first it was like the muffler had a slight tin sound from deep within, and now it's just a great pure deep rumble. =o)

My fabspeed did the same thing. A little disturbing if you weren't prepared.

Thanks for the tip Ben ;) I tried that already and only found one person who said they had dyno'd one. This was on a thread where I had asked the same question. He said he post results but never did, then some more searching revealed he later sold his headers and his M&K muffler "used for tuning only" in the classifieds.

Surely, you would have a copy of some of these dyno results?

Anyways, if anyone has some comparison data to post that would be great.

Thanks

mb911 10-04-2006 08:40 AM

yeah I did have some but My computer crashed and lost tons of info. I was and have never been that concerned with the dyno info as some are. More of a sound/last for many years type of thing.I do know that several have dynoed them and what the result was that with the cars properly chipped the gain was a few hp. I think the one you were refering to was the sport muffler(more visually pleasing) and I think he did sell it. I wish I could remember who exactly it was thought someone down in florida for some reason.

I will have numbers and charts shortly on our turbo set up though. very soon

andfar 10-04-2006 08:55 AM

that's why we do regular backups to preserve data from your hard drive! Anyway, so the benefit of an M&K muffler is basically better sound, and there's no documentation for any HP gain. Any perceived improvement can be attributed to the so-called "placebo" effect? How would this muffler compare with Monty?

Mine blew stuffing all over my driveway and my buddy who was helping me work on the car. It was the inagural starting of a new motor and I looked at the stuffing as if it were confetti celebrating a job well done!

Yeah! tell me about it. up until 5 years ago I had never turned on a computer.

All I can tell you is that some very big well known shop use M&K with very very good success and even work well with MFI cars how many mufflers out there can do that.

as compared to monty ,
I can not compare unbiased so I won't say.

I can also say no one has ever called and asked can I return this muffler it makes less power, my car runs poorly, or it is to restrictive. If there on no believers I offer try it out if you don't like it return it for a refund less shipping costs..

Now I feel that I am over stepping my bounds so I will not comment anymore on this thread. if anyone would like to discuss any further please pm me or email me I would be happy to give any and all feedback

widebody911 10-04-2006 09:11 AM

Are these available for B&B headers?

Mike Andrew 10-04-2006 09:29 AM

I still have my stock muffler & can truthfully say that it will never go back on as long as I own the car. I get lots of compliments from people on the sound, at idle & at speed. Now the neighbors......

joetiii 10-04-2006 10:20 AM

Hey Ben, Is the tailpiece cap exclusively for the Carrera's or do you have them for the sport too?
