Well, the poor guy is for some inexplicable reason comparing a sophisticated late-1990s car--the Boxster he claims to own--to cars that were made back in the day of the MGB, the TR-4, the Studebaker Lark, slant-six Plymouths, Corvairs...it's sort of like saying, "My neighbor has an XK8 and I thought Jaguars were supposed to be so neat, I drove an XK-120 and couldn't get it over 120. What's wrong???"

I'm not sure where he's coming from. Perhaps he's talking not about actual cars but computer-game cars.

No doubt my 3.2 is plenty fast enough for public streets, and hell yes it comes alive at higher revs! What would I do with that ugly dash cluster and rearend of a Boxter, for God's sake?!?
I kinda' like most of the new Porsches, but one must stop, think, and then admit that the fun, the charm, the kick in the pants feelings that surround the 911 are what make the road a helluva great place to frequent. Cool cars, plain and simple.
Besides, rust can be treated, though I don't have that affliction. Neither does my Carrera.
Too much HP is just a number and doesn't equate with reality. I wouldn't want my car to go sideways upon accelleration. My '86 has plenty of growl should I wish too experience it, and yes, it is sexy. Boxter? No way, man. Not even sexy.
I still find it astounding the amount of attention I get on the street. Er, that is, that my car gets.

Get yourself a nice 911 and enjoy life. Give the Boxter to the lady.

Well, it's not so much that he's wrong, it's that you either get old 911s or you don't....

I have a boxster too, and there is no denying it is faster out of the box than any pre-89 911, easier to drive too... So, assuming for a moment the original poster is not a troll, it's easy ti understand why one would step into an old 911 from a newish boxster and feel it's slow and antiquated...

When I want to go fast and not worry about it, I drive the boxster. When I want to be driving for the pleasure of driving, I drive my 911SC, when I want to go back to simpler days, I drive my 912 ! ;-) You get it or you don't. My SC is an agricultural grade, understeering, heavy pig of a car - and I love it for it ! But in this day and age of 300 hp sedans, it's not that fast...

Boxters need to be known for what they are. Not sexy. Period. Simply the truth, that's all. No choice but to chime in, even if all the yak is someone's/anyone's form of entertainment. No biggee, but my 911 prefers to be stuck-up for regardless of the nonsense floating around.
No hook, but no matter. I gathered from several posts that maybe this guy had a need for BS. Speed, Hp, purposeful antagonism, it's all fine, whether misguided or not. Some people need lives, obviously. Whatever...............Happy to oblige!

I remember a few years ago I totally dusted some punk in a Boxster in a drag race from a stop light on Sepulveda (no cross streets), in my 1998 BMW M Roadster. I pulled up at the next light and waited for him. When he pulled up, he said "Hey, that's pretty fast" and I said "Well, its faster than yours", and took off.

Now I have an 85 Carerra, totally stock, and it is WAY slower than my Roadster was, just no comparison. So if you're just looking for a fast fast ride, look elsewhere, because most M3s, M5s, and pretty much anything with a Turbo is going to leave a Boxster in the dust.

But if you're looking for a great car that handles well, goes fast enough, is a total joy to drive, and has people turning green with envy, or complementing you on your ride everywhere you go, then that's a different story.

Plus my Carrera is retaining its value pretty well. New sticker price was $38k, I purchased it for $16k 21 years later. You can pick up a 5 year old Boxster for $18k and it cost $57k new. And I have back seats.

I know I'm taking a bite of troll bait, but sometimes you just have to.

Levi i wanted a boxster when i first started lusting for a Porsche AND had the means to possibly own one. After a lot of reading i decided to check out 911s. I went to an autocross (traveled 4hrs each way just to see it) and that answered my question of 'boxster, m3, 911 or?'

I remember two cars in particular. One was an SC with a 3.2 euro in it and the other was a T w/ 3.2 euro (they were brothers) and man listening to and watching those guys haul ass around the course was absolute heaven. I found far more joy watching the older 911's getting tossed around than the boxsters, 996's, M3's, etc. The big bonus was i can learn to work on a 911 (particularly the '70 i am hopefully buying) but there is no way i'd tear into a boxster!

Yes, there are faster cars but FUN is what i'm after. Fast is relative and there is always somebody faster. My fondest driving memories are of my first car, an '82 VW Rabbit. Man that thing had double digit hp and a 4spd so you know it was fun! Seriously i had more fun in that car than the '87 Celica i owned a few years later. The Celica was faster but the Rabbit was fun. That is the reasoning that has brought me to the brink of 911 ownership.
