FWIK In 1974, 2.7s came with CIS and MFI injection. Mechanical Fuel Injection (MFI) was found on the most powerful 2.7 (210 hp), which was used in the ROW Carrera. The ROW 911S's 2.7 had CIS injection and put out 175 hp. In the U.S., there were two versions of the 2.7, both of which were CIS injected. The more powerful of the U.S. 2.7s was reserved for the 911S and U.S. Carrera. These engines developed 165 hp, and had a compression ratio of 8.5. The regular U.S. 2.7 had 8.0 compression and developed 150 hp.
I'm not certain why the ROW 911S 2.7 developed 10 more hp. than the U.S. version - maybe it was timing, maybe it was better gasoline - who knows? Both engines were the same AFIK, and none had smog emissions. In 1975 the MFI and CIS 2.7s continued as is for the ROW. But for the U.S., smog emissions hit them, which in addition to compromising the engine's integrity, lowered the hp. as well. As I recall the 8.0 compression 2.7 fell to 143 hp., and the 8.5 compression 2.7 fell to 147. In '76, the Carrera 3.0 came into vogue, and the 2.7, I believe was phased out. The U.S. still received them until '78 when the SC came out, which uses the 3.0 flat six.

Of course Doug and Afterburn give great advice as well. Also, check out Wayne's books. They're very good resources.

Look in the technicle article on this website. There is a good breakdown.
As I understand it, the us engines were the same from 74 - 77 but the 75 on 2.7s had Thermal Reactors which robbed 10 - 15 HP. The california engine was an anomoly - it has different timing / distributor and I'm not sure what the performance impact is. My 77 is a Cali car but all of the emmisions garbage fell off (or something) but the timing is supposed to be something like 17°ATDC if I recall. The 74 performed better because of the SIS style heat exchangers and it had a different (lower) final drive ratio. A well tuned 2.7 can out perform a 3.0 and the earlier cars are slightly lightewr than SCs. Don't be afraid of a 2.7 if they have had the stud issue fixed.

Only California 2.7's had the thermal reactor in 1976. Everyone did in '77.
