A terrific question, just in time !

Has not been discussed previously here on the forum. We need to start a thorough debate!

C'mon, somebody give the poor newbie a link...I can't find it. Gunter, bottom line is that K&N delivers no more power than the factory paper filter, and it may allow larger particles through...oiled or not.

Wow, rough crowd! Always a controversial topic. Consensus appears to be no improvement in HP or performance and lots of concern over more contamination vs stock filters. If K&N's are so bad, why has the company been so successful? I drank the cool-aid - my personal choice!

Here's my experience, take it for what it's worth. I'm running a K&N filter in a stock airbox (no cone)

Hwy MPG improvement with K&N filter

8-10% hp gain
12-14% torque gain
4-6% seat of the pants feel gain

Who can argue with those results!

It depends on how frequently you change your oil, what your car usage is like and where you are driving it.

I know several or most of the racers out there are running K&N, ITG or no filters at all. So take what everyone says with a grain of salt. If they work for you then they are good. If they don't then you have answered your own question.

Personally, not that you care. But I run them on my car (Full blown race car) and have for 7 years with out any problems. When I tear my motors down, they look great inside.. Go figure.

We're not a tough crowd, he just has incredible timing in posting this question. So that you're in on the joke, here's the link that started this dustup recently:Out of control K&N Thread
It's a long read, but hard to put down. Lots of helpful pictures too.

I like it because I can never snap the air box close. I don't have big paws either.

David, This is all your fault. You had to ask...
Bottom line is no gain from a K&N so why spend the $$? I have one on my car that came with the new motor and for my limited driving and always garaged ride it's not worth swapping out. 6 a one, half dozen of the ahhhh...who cares! LOL

Bottom line, if you decide to install a better flowing inlet to the MAF sensor (lets you cram more air in), then you just about have to run a K&N cone filter, or a similar type aftermarket filter. I don't know of anyone who manufactures a paper, pleated cone filter. Those claims for more power are probably based a similar inlet modification in conjunction to using a K&N filter, (because there is nothing else that would fit). Stock, I see no benefit.

No good:

K&N
Armor All
Motormeister
Any non-boutique wax
Oil that sells for less than $8 quart
V8's
Anything other than SSI's or perfectly equal length headers
and most recently, $50 Rustoleum paint jobs,
etc.

Please feel free to add to the list. I guess this could be a whole new thread...
