"To drop... or not to drop"

Ok, I just tried searching for the mysterious Engine drop thread that a couple of guys said was discussed at length a while back to no avail. So, I would like to hear some peoples opinions... is it easier or better to drop the engine with or without the transmission? I was planning on following the P.P tech article on "Engine drop made easy" but it seems that I have heard somewhere that it is quite dificult to do it this way.
What do you all think?

Take them out as a unit. That's my vote.

If you are using a lift, with an assortment of other garage tools like I think you are, it will be a snap. Unhook everything and get it out of the way. The unit comes down and back just enough to get the shift rod out of the car's 'tunnel.' I'd look really hard for the threads. Lots of minor tips.

Label the starter wires and terminals, they can be reversed. Almost nothing else can. Label everything anyway. Put fasteners in labeled tubs.

Piece of cake, Leland.

Is it me or is the engine and tranny fixed only by the mounts in the rear of the compartment? Where else are the Engine/Tranny
attached to the chassis?

Leland,
Don't even think of trying to separate the tranny from the engine while it is in the car. It is easy to drop the engine/trans. as a unit!!!
Know you can do it.

I agree Ned... I just wonder now why Pelican Parts has a tech. article showing the removal of the engine seperate from the tranny...
Oh well...
So, the procedures should stay almost the same right? Disconnect everything, support the engine/tranny with a jack, remove the two transmission mounts, then do the same for the two engine mounts then bring it out and back 'til it clears right??
I think the trickiest part is gonna be finding the center of balance.

With removing the trans also you need to

Disconnect Cv joints at trans
REmove 4 bolts that hold trans to transmission mount
Disconnect rear shift coupler
Disconnect back up light and speedo on trans

Even though this takes long it seems less likely to put stress on the input shaft on the trans and removing the starter which looks like a PIA to get the back bolt on it as well as the 4 bolts that hold the trans on

In the factory manual they say the trans and motor are always removed as a single unit there is no reference anywhere for just removing the motor
