Glenn, Congrats for hanging in and finishing it nicely.
The color in your engine bay is Sahara Beige or very close to it; same color as my car. By any chance did you find a rattle can with the color you used? Because if you did I'd love to know the brand and color name...I want to do mine and that looks very close. If not, did you get some paint mixed up by an automotive paint shop? Use a Preval or a regular spray gun? Some details, please?

Everyone, thanks again for the help and support. I did go into this as a wide-eyed optimist. But I am happy with where I ended up. I had/have to fix a few things I hadn't planned on but better to know about it now instead of being surprised later.
Terrible - the clutch is great. Between the new clutch/flywheel and fresh fluid in the tranny, shifting is a whole new (and faster) experience. Dan - I used a rattle can for the engine bay. It was Dutch Boy acrylic "yellow" that I found at Sears. Wish I knew what a real Talbot yellow looked like. This weekend I will re-torque the CV bolts and go over everything looking for loose bits and small leaks.

Glenn, Thanks VERY much for the rattle can info. I'll be at Sears after work to get one...try it out on my new Halon fire extinguisher. Per your PM, here are a few pix of my car. As I said, Sahara Beige doesn't photograph accurately. It isn't quite as hot as the first picture, but definitely not as soft as the other two. Real life its a little stronger than that. The last two pix are of Adam Chaplin's beautiful Talbot car from down Under. My car is a '76 but I backdated it with narrow bumperettes, metal grill (like Adam's), fog delete, bright mirror and 15x6's. I've got more pix if ou need them. Best, Dan

I'll have to take my car to a PCA event to do a side by side comparison. According to Porsche N.A., my car was delivered in Talbot Yellow. However, the rocker panels and front (for the lack of a better word) chin piece do not appear to have been repainted like the rest of the car. Those parts are a lighter yellow, closer to the color of your car. To add to the confusion, in a few spots where the paint has worn to the metal and in the areas under the trunk carpet as well as under the car near the transmission it looks like the base coat of paint is a very bright color similar to Rally Yellow. Perhaps my car was stripped and color changed at some point in its life then later changed back poorly.

Well, it has been a little more than a year since the engine went back in and since then I have added an additional 10-12,000 miles and run seven autocrosses during that time.
As of this afternoon, the engine is out again. It only took me about 2 1/2 to 3 hours this time, again without help. If I can find our camera, I'll post a picture of what a year's worth of daily driving has done to the appearance of the engine. My biggest concern was how much has the pitting on the cam has grown. I have yet to compare last year's picture (posted earlier in this thread) to the cam now but after an initial glance at the cam I'm thinking there has been very little change, if any. I'll give it a very close comparison sometime in the next day or two. If it hasn't grown and no new pitted areas have shown up, I'll leave the 964 cam upgrade for another year. This engine drop will then be for a valve adjustment, new CV joints, rear wheel bearings and perhaps some suspension work.

Sounds like you have had a lot of fun in the last year.
Sorry to hear about the pitting. Good oil is the only thing you can do to slow it down. What oil do you use? Thanks for the update!

Thank you. I use Valvoline VR-1 20w-50. Changed every 3,000 miles.

That's what I use too. I have 964 cams in my SC too. I had them ground and I installed them last year.

I had a chance to compare the pitted cam lobe to the picture I took last year. I blew up the picture and checked each and every nook and cranny, relative size and shape every comparison I could come up with and I cannot find any change at all.
So, with crossed fingers, I will move on to examining all the other lobes.

Hey Glenn,
I've been putting off this type of project for a while...but I need to do an engine drop and replace a few broken studs. I see you started in Oct 21 and ended Jan 2. To me, that sounds like a long time to be out of your car...and with my vastly lacking experience, I'd probably be out longer doing it all myself. My question is: How many man-hours do you think it took you from start to finish - engine drop to engine install?

If my weekends had been free and I had all the parts up front, I would have been done in a couple weekends.

I did my engine drop and rebuild and reinstall in 4 days. 8 hours a day.....of course that covered setbacks of missing parts from the gasket set. It takes about 2 to 3 hours your first time to drop the motor. Your 2nd and on takes less time because you will actually know what you are looking for. the install will take longer, especially if you are doing it yourself. But goes rather quick if you have 2 people who are doing it, especially if they have done it before.

I typically take my time, spending too much time admiring the engineering beauty and thinking about how everything works. But, I think I will see how fast I can do the install all by myself.
That is when I get all the other stuff done and have a some time. (I'm toying with refreshing the rear suspension "while I'm in there")
