I bagged the hoses, the electric panel and the A/C compressor. then I broke out the degreaser, scrub brushes and the pressure washer.

A few hours later...

I have a dilemma. I have suspected that my "Talbot Yellow" car has at some point in its life been color changed to a different yellow. I'm thinking "Speed Yellow." Some have told me that the color of my car is "Talbot Yellow." however I have seen a few pictures of Talbot Yellow cars that are a lighter, more pale yellow. There are also a few body panels that appear to be lighter/more pale than the rest of the car.

If you look in the first and second picture you will see that the yellow that was under the sound pad is indeed a lighter and more pale color. The color paint I have purchased is closer to the lighter color that the darker yellow on the rest of the car and the rest of the engine bay.

I had always thought that I would do a windows out re-paint some day and make sure the car ended up the "Talbot Yellow" it should be.

Also, as you can see, the paint in the engine bay isn't that bad.

So the question is.... should I repaint the engine bay the lighter color or leave well enough alone until I get around to the total re-paint?

T'was a silly question. Of course I painted it. Here are the after pictures.

I also found time to complete the last few items on the engine. With the exception of replacing one of the connectors on the back up switch wire, it is ready to be reinstalled.

Other remaining tasks include:
install sound pad
reinstall electric panel
rebuild CV joints
then install engine and drive.

I'm making good progress. I've disassembled and rebuilt two CV joints and I installed the sound pad yesterday. All that is left is to do is the other two CVs and clean the air filter. Then the engine goes back in. I don't go back to work until next Wednesday so getting it running by then shouldn't be a problem. I'll post pictures in a couple of days.

Glenn,
I think they are the mounting holes for the vacuum chamber on a sporto

Glenn: now you've got me wondering about my talbot yellow--I can tell it's been resprayed in about 5 or 6 different places but the color is definitely not pale--but not as intense as speed yellow, by any means.

That fan shround looks brighter than any paint on your car I've seen--just the photo?

Jack

PS. You started out inspiring me to drop my engine but I am horrible about the 'while you're there' situation--so I don't want to get started...!

Thanks Ray. Others have agreed with you. They are mounting holes for the sportmatic vacuum system.

Jack - the color I ended up using in the engine bay is too light and my car isn't quite Speed Yellow but I'm fairly certain the respray was not a good color match to the correct Talbot Yellow. The fan is "Safety Yellow." Out of laziness, I went with an easy and obnoxious color instead of trying to get a correct match.

If I ever get around to a windows-out repaint, I'll match all the colors correctly at that time.

Glenn

Happy new year to all. I hope you rang in the new year with more excitement than I did. I completed the rebuild of the CV joints last night and got one shaft back on the car.

My 10 year old son and I re-installed the engine a couple days ago and have slowly been reconnecting the various wires, cables and oil lines.

The CV joints are not long for this world but I should be able to get a few more miles out of them before they will need replacement. I found spots like this on three of the four joints.

And the fourth wasn't much better. Here is a shot of the bearings from the joints. The one on the left is clean. You can see the chunks of what used to be the CV grease that I picked out of the joint.

I should have the other shaft installed today then I think I will be ready to fire her up.

I wonder what I forgot.........

The second drive shaft is in. All lines, wires etc have been checked and double checked. Cranked the engine without starting just enough to build up the oil pressure. Ran the fuel pump long enough to clear the air from the lines and verify I had no leaks. Then with a couple of back fires and a belch of smoke she started. Wooo Hooo!!

The smoke continued as trapped cleaner and residual oil burned off but ... the alternator light did not go out. So I shut it down, knowing that tomorrow I will be opening things up a bit to move a couple of wires on the alternator. Damn! That is a lot of work for a stupid mistake.

I'll also be double checking the shifter adjustment, throttle adjustment and resetting the clock (very important).

The light at the end of the tunnel is very bright.

I'm Done!!!!!

Really, there is nothing left to do on this project. The engine is in and runs great. Thanks to a new clutch kit and cleaning up the clutch throw out mechanism, it feels like new. It will take me a day or two to get used to that.

I must sincerely thank everyone who provided knowledge, tricks, tips and kind words. Your support has been tremendous. I never felt alone.

Here is a shot of the finished product.

I will start to put together a "lessons learned" essay to post under another heading. But that may take a few days....I have some catching up to do.

Glenn, Looks great. I hope the cam wear is not an issue for a long time. But drive it hard until then. I will be in touch after a while to see how the clutch is working for you when I replace mine I would like to go the route you went. Anyway Good Luck and have fun!

i have not read this thread, so if someone has told you this, here it is agian. keep an eye on your CV joint bolts, put in new washers and recheck after 100 miles or so. you might want to put some locktite on them too. check the length of the bolts and make sure a thread or 2 is past the mounting flange. if you need longer screws, check with fastenal, i just bought a bag of 50 for $10.
car looks good! nice job!

Congrats, Glenn--looks awesome, I, too, am going to be tackling the clutch in a few months and have already learned a lot from your thread.

And your color looks exactly like mine--only a bit nicer.

Good job--bet you're glad to be back behind the wheel--certainly look happy enough!

Jack
