What's Up With My Transmission???

A couple of days ago I have been having trouble shifting. The car runs and shifts fine for an hour or so then all of a sudden it grinds into 1st and reverse. Out of the blue. I park it and try it the next day or a few days later...same thing. Shifts fine for a while, then grinds into 1st and reverse. What's up??? HELP!!!

What kind of transmission fluid are you using?

I'm not sure, it was filled when I had the car serviced a year ago. I plan on doing all of the regular maint. myself now. A. Do you think this may be the problem? B. What kind should I be using. Thanks for any advise.

My .02:
It could be PART of the problem. Try switching to a synthetic like Swepco. Pelican carries it.

Seeing as though we are talking about 1st and reverse which are at totally opposite ends of the range I would suspect a shifter bushing or coupler issue.
Try doing a coupler alignment first before messing with a fluid change. I
don't believe that year old fluid would be bad already.

How many miles on the car? Do you try and put it into first while rolling?

Clearly this is an issue of the clutch not releasing when hot.

This is a classic symptom of oil on the clutch disc.

Another possibility is a rubber center disc just starting to shed rubber chards.

If a G50, could it be an issue with the slave cylinder?

Best,
Grady

Swepco is the #1 non-synthetic.

Swepco isn't synthetic. It dino-based. If it's 1st and reverse, could also be an issue with the clutch not being adjusted properly and not being fully disengaged. If somehow the clutch cable loosen's up during the hour you drive it, it could be not dis-engaging enough resulting in the grind. Check all the pivots and mounting points/ends of the cable to see if any bushings are worn in a strange way that could result in losing tension. It could also be something that's interfering with the cable when cold that free's up when warm also resulting in loosening the cable.

As others have suggested, (also in my case), changing to a thicker (ie Swepco) tranny oil may help. Your transmission needs some amount of friction for the syncros/brake bands to work. If the oil is too slipperly, (either synthetic, or normal gear oil that warms up and gets thinner), then worn brake bands may not be able to do their job effectively.

Good luck!

Yup, sorry about that. Swepco is dino.
I have been looking into other fluids and had synthetic on my mind.
Gettin' old, you know!!

Thank you everyone for the input. I will look into your suggestions. I have a 1976 911S - 2.7 My clutch cable snapped about 18 months ago and I had it replaced. Could this be a factor? Thanks.
