2.4 MFI preheater
I've got a '72 911S. The engine is a 2.4 w/ MFI. Sometime before the previous owner someone removed the hose coming off the left heat exchanger and removed what I think is known as the preheater. This is the box which sits in front of the air intake. Anyone know what the actual name of this part is? I assume this was meant to get the car up to operating temperatures quicker from a cold start. My car does indeed take a while to warm up.
I haven't been able to find this part in any catalogs. Any ideas where I could get one? Also I've seen several pictures of other 72-73 911s with this same mod. Is this common? Does removing it improve performance or does it just break often? Thanks ------------------ Greg 72 911S |

Here are my 2 cents:
I have a 73E, 2.4 with MFI. The pre-heater hose is no longer there as is the Left heat exchanger piece from which it originates. My understanding is that that portion of the exchanger usually rusts off before the rest of it. End result is my car seems to run just fine without it, though if the metal part of the exchanger is still there, I would go and buy the hose for it.

My heat exchangers are both rusted through, so I've just ordered a pair of stainless SSI's with the MFI hose attachment on the left side. I can get the hose. Any ideas where I can get the box it attaches to?

I guess the reason may vary with the region of the country you are in ...
The fact is that the [warm-up] Regulator Housing (from the parts catalogue) is there only to please the smog police! In Texas, early in the first summer with my car, oil temp. became an issue without the front oil cooler, so I figured the engine didn't need preheated air going into the air cleaner in the summer, so off it came! Since the '67 911S didn't have it, and didn't have a slow warm-up problem, I don't think your warm-up is related to the 'regulator' ... but there is one thing that IS REQUIRED for proper warm-up on an MFI car: the 1" hot air hose to the injection pump thermostat!!! It needs to be undamaged, uncrimped, without ANY cracks or holes! The thermostat itself needs to be removed, disassembled, and cleaned on an annual basis ... with B-12 ChemTool or a similar solvent! Instructions for cleaning can be found in the factory MFI 'Blue Book' publication, a copy of which can be found at this URL: http://www.geocities.com/william_armentrout/mfi.html There is also a new tech. section here on Pelican for the MFI system at: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_MFI/TipMFI.htm Good luck! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 08-02-2000).] |

Hmmm, interesting! Pelican Parts have now got that MFI info direct. This is great! I only wish it was there a while ago while I was in the process of pulling my hair out!
If you haven't read my other threads, I would well advise all you MFI guys to do the checks and adjustments best described by Lee Rice. I'm well on the way to a good understanding of this system, and have nearly got it all set up sweetly. Nearly meaning I take a day off work tomorrow and finish it off...... Well done again guys. ------------------ '72 911 TE |
