Motor Swap from 3.0 to 3.6
I know this issue has been talked about many times, but i cannot find the proper threads. I want to install a 3.6 into my 79 SC and would like to know what problems I will run into before I start. Do I use the DME or an aftermarket engine management system?
Do I use the entire motor with induction and exhaust? Should I install a better trans? how much should I expect to spend on the conversion Finally would it be better to spend the money along with trading in my 79 and buy a newer ride.

Definitely go to Dr. Steve's site referenced above
Believe me there is a lot of info, please do a search. You will need the from the donor car: motor w/ tin, the harness from the motor to under the front seat, the DME and associated components from under the front seat, the ignitors(they look like coils) and thats about it. The major components that you will need: a flywheel, a conversion harness, an exhaust system, a large oil cooling setup modified donor tin, modified stock rear engine mounts and lots of little odds and ends

plan to spend 10-12k if you use a 964 3.6 and 12-15k if you do a 993 3.6 engine.

I've done 4 or 5 911 3.6 conversions and one in a 914. All have successfully used the 915 tranny. Don't wast money going to a G50 unless you are not happy with your current 915. I'd recommend upgrading the drive flanges and half shafts to the 86 to 89 ones. Some people drop the rear of the engine so the stock 964 tins can be used. I am not infavor of that. It looks stupid. It is faily easy to modify the tins so they fit in the car with the engine in the proper location. Use the stock DME with a chip to reduce stalling due to the lighter flywheel. Stay away from the Varioram engines unless someone can gurantee to make it run, the "lock-block" is a real PIta.
You'll love the power and dependability of the 3.6. Go for it.

Search under "wheatdog" for some pics and general dialogue of my 3.6 Vram install into an '86 Targa. Not very detailed though. It went quite well without hassles using Dr. Steve's kit from Instant G. Paid 10.5 G for the motor and about 3.5 G for the crossover kit with DME upgrade and Sachs power clutch and PP but didn't include exhaust. I did all the work myself including fabbing a dual glasspack exhaust set up that works good and sounds great. If you're any kinda wrench, do it yourself. Its not difficult if your experienced doing engine swaps and such.

Also thinking of selling the Vram Targa. Any takers? Runs like a purple assed baboon. Moving on to other things if I can get about 25 large for the car.

Drive Block is/should be disabled when going with a modified ECU map.
280HP at the wheels can be yours......

Here's a tip: if you use a 993 engine and keep the heat exchangers and M&K can make you a bolt up stainless muffler for a reasonable price.
