Permatune and Pertronix

I am trying to get a Permatune CDI to work in my 911. The PO had removed the old CDI and put in a points and coil system. I had changed it to use a Pertronix Ignitor, Crane HI-6 CDI and Crane PS-92 coil. The Crane burnt out so I went back to just the Pertronix and stock coil.

Recently I won a Permatune CDI, stock coil and harness from a '73 T. My old harness was very ratty so I wired in the newer harness CDI and coil. It didn't work for me. I'm just wondering if it will work with the Ignitor or should I retrofit it with points? I have it hooked up with the breaker wire to the red wire on the Ignitor and the black Ignitor wire meeting the ground wire on the coil.
The Ignitor was working till I hooked up the Permatune system. I bench tested the Permatune like on their website and and the results were within spec. The coil has .9 ohms resistance through it but I tried the other coil as well and it didn't work either. The resistance through it was 2.8 ohms. Which one should I be using? He had been using it but replaced it with a MSD system.
Everything is wired proper according to the '73 schematic so the only thing I can figure it to be is incompatability with the Pertronix. Is anyone successfully running this system?
I won it for cheap and it is warranteed to be operational so I'm hoping to get it working.

I am a bit confused about all of the changes you are making at the same time.

If you have the Permatune wired correctly, you should be able to test the coil, and Permatune unit by using a jumper to ground on the wire that goes to the distributor ... the Black wire with Purple stripe. With the ignition switch on, and a sparkplug wire plugged into the coil, with a sparkplug in the end and in contact with a good ground, you should get a spark at the plug each time you ground that wire and lift it off, manually.

I presume you have the OEM Bosch 0.221.121.001 coil. The resistance of my coil's primary coil is 0.65 Ohms, and the secondary is 676 Ohms, just for reference.

If the tests show your coil and Permatune unit are working, then making the point replacement work or putting in a point set is all you have to worry about!

Thanks Warren for yet another solution to one of my problems. I jumped it like you suggested and it worked perfect. I pulled the distibutor and put in points and now its working better than ever. I hope that I never have to ask about ignition problems again.

Now for the sunroof

Thanks

Gary, I am pretty sure that the pertronix set up burnt out the crane unit. It only uses the point set up as a gnd for triggering. The same as the other. I have one(Crane box) and it has given me no trouble (but maybe I have been lucky).

Gary,
I tryed the Pertronics with my stock CDI with terrible results. The car ran sluggish and would bearly idle plus it burned up my RPM TRANSDUCER.I reinstalled the points with no problem since. Lesson learned!!!!!! KEEP IT STOCK.

Thanks for all the advice. I put points back into it and now it works excellent. For some strange reason the exhaust sounds much quieter with the permatune in it. Can anyone explain that? Also I can't seem to get the timing light to work on it. I've tried two different ones to no avail. I'll check the timing lights on a different vehicle tomorrow to see if they both don't work.
