Wrench size question?

OK, I might be a complete idiot. My car (83SC - stock motor)seems to be running a tad rich (smell only). Maybe this is normal, but I was going to try leaning it just a bit. I looked at Wayne's book about adjusting the mixture, and it speaks of the adjustment using a hexhead wrench. I don't see anything in his book that mentions the size of the hexhead wrench needed. I can go out and figure it out, but just wondered if someone out there could save me some trial and error. Also, I have an atmospheric tester at work that I can use to measure CO. Wayne says to make sure to measure that after any mixture adjustments, but I do not see a level or range of CO mentioned. Did I just miss it? Will someone clue me in?

Thanks

It's a 3mm Allen head. Be careful adjusting. Since you have a CO tester available, you have the advantage. There may be a small plug covering the access hole on the fuel distributor.

The Search function really works!

Search on "CIS adjustment wrench" gives this as one of the threads:

CIS mixture adjustment

Thanks

Oh HaHa,

Thanks for the info. I knew it was small...

MM83Targa. I agree, the search function really does work well. I have used it a few times successfully, here and on other BBS's. However, I am still new and wasn't exactly sure what to search for. I tried a few things like "mixture adjustement" etc, but did not find it. Sometimes it is a more effective and efficient use of one's time to simply ask a question. As it turns out, HaHa answered my question PDQ. Thanks again Oh Ha Ha. Sorry to have bored you MM. There is also such a thing as do not read posts that are not of interest

OK, off the soapbox... (no offense MM)

You might say you meant no offense to Mark, but you don't seem sincere. He went through the trouble of finding a thread that would help and deserves as much thanks as Wayne being as they posted at about the same time.

You shouldn't take offense at someone mentioning the search engine here because we joke about how everything has been answered at least a dozen times and there are no new questions. No one will stop you from asking anything you want, but you should be nice about it.

Sorry

Uh.. OK, maybe that did not come out right. But he replied with an exclamation mark that the search engine does work! It seemed a little on the "hey stupid" side to me, but if I am in the wrong, then I wholeheartedly apologize. I really did not mean any offense, and yes I was sincere. I was halfway joking, halfway serious about my response. Sometimes the veteran's forget that there are still a LOT of us rookies. I use to see it a lot on some of the hot rod boards, only you guys, in ALL seriousness, tend to be much more forgiving.

I truly meant no offense to Mark, and gladly thank him as well for the info in his post. Mark, if you were offended by my comment, please accept my apology.

Back to the issue:
You'll need a long, LONG 3mm Allen key BUT, you may find that the access hole for the mix adjustment is plugged on an '83 with a lead plug that needs to be drilled out.
It cannot be drilled out with the engine in the car.

Your next question will be: Where is the access hole?

Do a search; mix adjust stuff has been covered many times!

Also, I recommend the Bentley SC Repair Manual; very useful!

Thanks for the extra info. Sorry it got off issue. After BB pointed out the CIS mix adjust, I searched again and found , as you said, lots of info, including Souks great writeup. Just needed some help knowing what to search for. Still learning "German"!

My top end was rebuilt from PO at 104k... hopefully they have already made the screw accessible. We'll see...

Actually, it can be drilled out in the car, but be prepared for a long experience. I used a drill bit in a pen vise and turned it by hand. Started with a small bit and worked up until the allen wrench would fit. Took several hours, but still less work than dropping the engine.. Next time I had the engine out, I driled it out the rest of the way so the stock rubber stopper from the earlier cars would fit.
