Engine Number? Where is it?

Just like to know where to look for a number on the engine. I am looking at a car, engine is out, but I can't find a number anywhere. There is a shroud over the entire engine, will this have to be removed?

Thanks
Shawn

Hello there - look down this page and you'll find an entire topic (with 13 replies) on the subject of engine numbers...

But, since you ask, the engine number is on the right side of the cooling fan support. That's the curved section at the back of the engine looking at the pulley.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention that you don't need to remove the cooling shroud or anything else to see the engine number...

The serial number is located on the right side vertical fan support as previously stated. The type number is located just right of the serial number on the horizontally flat surface a little rearward. This number tells you the basic type of engine and year, such as 930/63.

Better add this cause I know someone will comment on it - there were no "930s" made in "63" you have to refference a guide to crack the code.

Bruce Anderson's 'Handbook' has the most extensive list of engine types I am aware of, and specs associated with each type. The factory spec books include only a small 'slice' of the whole list, broken up into 2-4 years of the whole picture since '64!

Curiosity.

I found the engine number on the shroud support and am relieved to find that it matches -- 6392102.

I also found the 901/10 stamp. Maybe 1/2 inch below the 901/10 stamp is a raised number 26274. What is that?

I haven't heard anyone talking about this third number....
