rack and pinion Identification

I have a rack that I was told was for a 911. This is the part number 914-347-014-01. Will this rack work on a 911 or is it for a 914? Thanks for any help on this.

914 347 010 01 is a rack for a 911 T or S from 1969 to 1971

901 347 010 02 is a rack for a 911 E from 1969 to 1971 (probably due to hydropneumatic suspension)

914 347 010 06 is a '72- on rack

and just for fun, 901 347 951 10 is a -67 rack and

901 347 010 01 is a 1968 rack.

The 914 used a 914 347 010 06

Thanks John. So I should be able to use this rack in my sc while I rebuild my rack. That way I have no down time.

Well, be careful, the part numbers don't match. I would have the spare rack checked out by a competent shop. You can fake everything but steering and brakes.

Does it look like this?

This would be the second generation rack noted by the two diamond shaped (gold tone) cover plates. Models of this design fit 911s, 914's and 930; all have the same ratio, however the 930 model has slightly different mounting
thread hole depths.

The first generation rack looked alike this one however the rack shaft length is different and in place of the diamond shaped gold tone covers would be a round aluminum plate.

Most of these racks do not have a Porsche part number stamped on them but rather ZF's pn.

(off the top of my head)

Does it have a part number (there may be more than one set of numbers) stamped on it that, such as 7820 955 XXX ?

I would look one more time for the ZF pn, ie.
7820 955 XXX ? and let us know if you can find it.
In the mean time, what is the length of the rack shaft end to end?

Kuehl, I checked I could not a zf pn. The rack length end to end is 19.75".

OK. This PN model actually has a VW stamp on the other side as I recall. And I believe the length of the later 911 racks was only 18.5" (if it makes a difference in tie rod adjustment for you I don't know).

There is write up by Kevin on this particular 914 model here on PP should you need it:
Steering Rack "Rebuild" Procedure

Other than length issue of rack, I believe the mounting boss hole center distance is the same. The only other feature I could not verify today was the steering coupler mount.

Hope this helps you. Otherwise bergporsche looks like he has plenty of spares to support us all through the end of the century.

OK kuehl then what I have is not a 911 rack but a 914 rack correct? It does appear to have a vw stamp on it.

Well I've been pelted with tomatoes all day, so what the heck.
YUP. Sounds like an early 914 rack, especially with the VW stamp.
