Throttle Linkage Problem

Hi,
The throttle linkage in my 1988 Carrera, that is between the throttle housing and the lever on the console (see pic) keeps popping off at the ball and socket end. According to PET there's supposed to be a securing clip to hold it together. I went to my local dealer and picked up the clip. I could not figure out how to attach the clip. I went back to the dealer and spoke to a tech. He said there was supposed to be a hole in the ball and socket thru which the clip was supposed to go thru. Neither the existing ball nor the socket have any holes. I decided to replace the linkage (see pic). The new linkage looks exactly like the old one and it also pops off after a few blocks of driving. The weird thing is that the linkage in my car is opposite of the linkage shown in PET (see pics). I used the part number from PET and got the same linkage that was in the car. If there's anybody that has any ideas I can try to remedy the problem, I would be most appreciative. I live in Queens, NY if anybody wants to drop by and take a look.

the small clip... the straight part goes into a hole in the ball... it is actually two little holes....then pushed in and the clip flipped over the round part "holding" the ball

clean the ball and look with a good light.. you will see

Today I tried looking closer for the holes.
I think I saw a hole in position 2 in the pic below....
Is that where the holes are supposed to be or in position 1?
The picture is of a ball from a trailer hitch...it's the closest thing I could find to the actual part that kinda looks like it....

there is a hole in pos. 1 parallel and inline with the hole in pos. 2... the straight part of the clip pin goes in starting at pos. 1 and then you rotate to lock the clip on the linkage shaft

actually I think the holes are both the in the "ball" part...my memory is not great on this...I'll have my car in the air today I'll try to remember to take a picture

I hope this helps. Look at your drawing. Number 9 is a clip. Number 14 is a pin. It looks like a backward question mark and is located on the drawing about 1 inch directly below the number 14. Forgive me if you already know this, but the Number 14 pin is what fits it the very small hole you are looking for on the linkage. I have an extra if you cant get one from your Porsche dealer. I found it last weekend while lubricating the throttle linkage. Evidently, it was dropped during assembly, and lodged under the clutch pedal lever. I guess the assembler had a ready supply of these pins, because all the ball and sockets on my 1987 Carrera are secured with the same type pin.

Thanks, I bought the pin from the dealer and tried to install it. Neither my original linkage nor the new one I bought from the dealer had any holes in the socket. The ball at the end of #6 is attached to a console #1 in pic below. I cannot see any holes in the ball. Today I tried to remove the console and got 95% of the way thru, but could not get the linkage that attaches to #4 in the pic off. It has a hole in it and a clip. Will try again to get the other linkage off and remove the console when I have another chance.

my bad I think.... the holes for the "pin" are in the socket side not the ball side...look for the small holes in the socket e.g. near the #14 in the picture

Hi,

Nope, no holes in the original socket and no holes in the new socket that I bought from the dealer. I looked, the tech at the dealership looked. I don't know.

Does the round socket on #8 linkage turn?...if it doesn't then the linkage you have must be wrong because the angle would be different to the picture.

Nope, the socket end does not turn. The other end does, where the linkage connects to the throttle housing. #8 is the exact part that came out of my car except the socket is pointing the opposite direction. The dealer used the part number associated with #8 to order a new part. The new part is exactly the same as the old (it is pictured in my original post).

Then it is the wrong part and likely for a newer model, the old part may be N/A and have a general supercesion...plenty of cars being parted out in the classifieds, you should look there.

here is a picture of a socket and a pin that locks in the ball... you can just see the tip of the pin and you see how it locks around the socket shaft...

So the pin comes out with some prying, then the ball can be popped off and adjusted to tighten or loosen the linkage?

Thanks hcoles and bmgmd for the great pictures, but the link I'm referring to is at the top of the engine just below the intake manifold between the firewall and the intake manifold. I found the pic below on the internet. #1 is the link and #2 is the console it attaches to.

o.k. I just checked my '88 and it appears you have the right linkage...There does not appear to be a "clip" so it must pop on to the ball, replace #6 as I'm sure that the ball is your problem.

*note.. the diagram must be generic as it is a reverse of what's actually on the car.

ok...I don't remember of all the ball/socket locations in the throttle linkage system have pins...someone knows. I do remember that I was at an autocross and a ball came off a fellow competitors car and I reached in and popped it back on.... he beat me later that day.

I guess I'll try and replace #6.
I now feel like that's a weak link and can pop at anytime.

I was down in New Jersey when it popped off. Nowhere near any repair shops. All the shops I would trust are here in the NY area. Plus it was a Sunday, no shops open anyway. After 1.5 hrs of tryin to get my hands down behind the intake (note: hot intake) I was finallly able to get 2 wire ties around the linkage at #6 and made it home without incident.

hcoles, I also just reached in and popped it back on, but a few miles down the road it popped again.....and again...and again...
