Sachs Part Disintegrtrated ???
What caused this part to disintegrate? Can I just buy this part?

Thats a spring washer from your throwout bearing, or what's left of it. Yes, you can certainly get this part, with a new throwout bearing. As it sits outside the pressure plate the bits should just fall into the flywheel housing. Probably metal fatigue.

Metal fatigue????!!!!!!! This unit has less than 10K miles on it!
Grrr. Now I have to buy a throwout bearing along with it? Is this a normal wear and tear? I would think it should last for a lot lot lot longer than that. Anyone else has experience with Sachs failing? Last edited by cab83_750; 11-19-2006 at 08:13 PM.. |

BTW, the clutch was functioning perfectly before I discovered this. What is its main purpose?
I have since thrown the instuctions manual, but does someone know the orientation of this unit at installation? thanks |

Thats not normal. Besides, it's on the less stressful side of the pressure plate, between the bearing and the fingers of the plate and not the inside (pull side). I'm not even sure what function it performs other than to keep the release bearing from wiggling around too much. Perhaps it was put in backwards? It has a convex side which goes toward a washer. If it is put in backwards those little teeth might have been thrashed by the spring fingers? If no one else posts one I can get the picture from Bentley. Haynes has a good one too. I don't think you can get just the spring washer without the whole throwout bearing kit, unless someone has an extra one.
PS: Is that that oh so expensive aluminum pressure plate?

Here's that diagram of a typical throwout assembly. If your clutch friction plate still has lots of material on it you will probably only need a new TO bearing. The flywheel surface does have some scratches on the surface in that photo... where did those come from?

Find your favorite local Porsche repair shop and see if they have any used TOBs they haven't yet thrown away. Or if anyone on the list has one they'd give you. And salvage the spring washer from it.
The washer is installed so its fingers rest on the regular spacer washer, which rests in its recess in the TOB as shown in the diagram. If it is put in backward I think it is prone to break. Another potential cause of breakage may be excessive play. The pressure plate should need to be pressed down really really hard (flattening out the diaphragm spring some) in order to insert the split ring lock over on the other side. That will make the TOB hard to move around (not hard to turn, just hard to reposition within the space available). If this is too loose, see if you can add an additional spacer washer over on the other side under the spring washer, and still get the unit assembled and attached to the diaphragm spring. Get this extra spacer in the same way - by begging. Walt Fricke |
