Help: Source of this Mysterious sound

The car is a 1978 SC Targa with stock motor. This mysterious sound was first observed a year ago then disappeared. Then last weekend, this weird sounding noise came out again.

This is how I would discribe this noise/sound: sounded like between a hooting owl and crying puppy. Not loud but very discernable when driving. It occured around 3000 AND 4000 RPM while driving most of the time. Sometimes not. And lasted only about a fraction of a second (short and faint).

Could it be seat belt buzzer relay? Wind noise thru the targa seal? I don't know where to begin my quest to find the source of this mysterious sound/noise. Any suggestions, advise, tips, etc. even if it sound silly will be considered. Thanks.

Tony

This is very difficult to assist with. Is the sound coming from the front of the car or the rear? is it a mechanical sound or natural one? What I mean is, does the sound seem to be gear related or engine related? or does it seem to be wind or other natural related sound? Sorry, this is just tough to help with via the web...

front vs cabin vs engine would be the first differential
wierdest noise my 78 made was when i had a pulley shim that i didn't get flush, it pinched and the ?angle led to a strange little "howl" intermittently

Weird sound.....

Thanks guys for trying to pinpoint the source of this mysterious noise. I knew even before I posted this subject that it won't be easy and could even be ridiculous.

The sound seems to emanate from the front end. If I would make a quess, it was coming under the dashboard. I will try to drive the car this weekend and see if I could focus on the source of the sound.

The funny thing is that I was able to totally dismantled and rebuilt the car, yet this weird sound has completely baffled me. I have no idea where it's coming from. Your suggestions will be considered and investigated. Thanks.

Could it be wind noise? A howling sound . maybe have some one else sit in the car and listen for were the noise is comming from. My car is so loud if it's making noise I don't know about it!

My '87 targa did the same thing and I tracked it down to the right front blower motor. Just pushed the right hand lever all the way down and it went away for me.

toney that top on your targa blowing around and bubbling up has to make some noise. Does it sound like it is above you?
