Okay.. another what is this in my 69'

I am new to Porsche been around sportscars and raced a lot but this is my first Porsche.. My excuse is I have no owners manual.

But what is the knob on the left???


Is it stock? It looks like a led which can't be 69'...

The headlights say H4.. cibie brand.. is this "stock" and does my fender appear to be stock?



Anyway to fix the mirror plating on these? Mine it totally deteriorated on the inside of the lens.. I assume that makes these useless..

The knob appears to be standard auxiliary (fog or driving) light switch. the center lights up when the switch is activated.

The headlights are a standard Cibie H-4 replacement to the original US spec sealed beam.

Those black switches are from an SWB 911. The "led" is actually a lucite element that carries light from the bulb in the back. The rubber-covered switches are from a LWB although I'm not sure of the cutover year.

Being a 69' couldn't it be a switch brought over for that year? I guess when my PCA document gets here I will know if fog lights were stock.

Correct about the fog light switch--that's what it is. 69s in the U.S. did not come from the factory with fog lights, as far as I know, but they were often added by dealers (they are different than 66-68 lights). John is also correct about the swithch itself, it seems to be from an earlier model, but my 69 had one also. My guess is fogs were added by the dealer and the switch came from stock from earlier cars. Typical. And yes, your fender does appear to be stock.

Hmmm so a pca doc is not going to show this if its dealer added? Any other ways to confirm? Dash is coming out anyway.. would be an easy weld up.. suppose a lot cheaper than sourcing stock fogs in a-1 condition!

Unless you are going to show the car, why remove the switch? Many long nose cars, 69-73, had fogs added, and you can order a rubber knob that screws onto your existing switch shaft to make it more "correct". As far as the lights themselves, yes, they are expensive and can be hard to find. (If I remember correctly, they are Hella 139s. Earlier cars used the 128s. It has to do with the mounting bracked and size of the lens). Personally, I like the look of the fogs, but that's just me.

By the way, I am no Porsche expert, but I have two 69 cars, (currently down to one), both were stock 912's. If you have any particular questions, that do not include engine items feel free to shoot me a personal e-mail and I'll be glad to help, if possible.

A COA won't show dealer-added accessories. If the fog lights don't show up as original from Porsche, remove the switch take a look at the way the hole was made through the dash padding. If it was done by a dealer, the hole will probably be a little irregular. Likewise, you could take a look at the wiring and deduce if it looks like an unmolested factory harness, routed with the rest of the wiring, or something that has been added later or shows evidence of having been screwed with. Most of the add-on wiring I find in cars is poorly installed.

The fog lights aren't that hard to find used, if you want them. I'd skip the welding of the hole, if you decide to delete the switch. You can plug the hole in the sheet metal with a plug. The hole in the padding can be plugged also. Porsche made a plug for this purpose and other sources have them too. Or you can remove the dash padding (carefully, it's glued on and pretty fragile after all these years) and replace it with a similar piece that doesn't have the hole, or recover the one you have and re-install it. There are a few NOS dash pad pieces floating around out there; I've found them for other cars.

One last option would be to keep the switch and use it for another purpose; for example, an anti-theft fuel pump kill switch.

If you are not too concerned about originality, one of the guys on the early S registry, Tom Dance, sells a nice set of driving lights that attach to the stock fogs. ~$120 shipped.

Thanks guys.. all excellent advise and information! I think I'll wait for my PCOA and see if it says anything (doubtful).. then decide what to do.. the fuel pump kill switch is pretty awesome if you ask me.. would have been even better when I was a teenager if you get my meaning.. Maybe I'll try it out on my girlfriend anyway. LOL...

Thinking of sloshing around some chrome paint inside the cibies.. unless they can be had cheaply.. gonna do a search now... If I were buying the car Id rather have the H4's then the USA setup..

What they all said about the switch and fender. The spoiler, however, is not '69 vintage. It came out in '73 if I recall. Could be metal (factory) or fiberglass (aftermarket). Excellent aero match with the ducktail.
