Can a novice change spark plugs

I have a '90 C4 and I'm not mechanically inclined. I'm good at fixing things but know little about engines - I've changed plugs on other cars, but not on Porsches. Is there anything I need to look out for when changing plugs on a 911 (other than keeping the firing order correct) - or should I have it done at the shop next time it's in? Which plugs should I use?

You should have no trouble with this. I found that my existing tools do not work nearly as well as the spark plug socket, and allen wrench, taht is in the car's factory tool kit. Others have said this too. I suspect your tool kit has the same tool and I strongly recommend using that tool. I think it will be a snap for you.

torque wrenches are not needed. Spark plugs should be tightened until the crush washer is crushed, and no tighter. You can feel it crush. I use a little anti-seize.

I recently changed the plugs on my 91-C2 for the first time and it took about 2 hours. With the dual plugs it is necessary to remove the air filter and electric blower from the top of the engine to get access above and the engine shield, muffler, cat converter and insulation shielding from below the engine, to get access to the lower plugs. The plug connector may be stuck to the valve cover so be careful not to pull on the wire itself to remove from the plug. The plugs are easily removed with the tool kit socket or any spark plug socket with an extension. I also adjusted the valves during this maintenance which took an additional 3 hours and required the removal of much of the same components from the engine. Good luck.
