front jack points

I've discovered a fuel leak and in order to get a closer look at where it is coming from I need to remove the steering plate cover. I'd like to jack up the front end without damaging the car or myself. Is it okay to jack on the auxiliary support (where the control arm meets) and to put jack stands on the front receptical(cross member?) of the transverse control arm? And is this also referred to as the torsion tube and the bar at the front going from right transverse conrol arm to left transverse control arm called the cross member?

You did not mention the year, but most 911's I have seen have jack pads on both side, the front one is just behind the wheel well and just iside the rocker. The rear one is just forward of the rear wheel well. They are a raised square of metal. I'd recommend using the side jack point and putting stands under one side at each pad. Good luck.

sorry, '78SC - thanks for your reply John but I don't see the pads you refer to.

The 'crossmember' is the aluminum or welded steel piece that is bolted to the tub and connects the two rearmost pivots of the A-arms, and is where height adjustments are made, at the rear of the torsion bars.

One of the best points for jackstands are the forward mounts of the A-arms. I prefer to use the factory jack receptacles and a 'jack plate' adapter with a floor jack to jack each side of the car 4" to 6" at a time, alternating sides to get to the desired altitude. It takes a bit more time, but there is no danger whatsoever of damaging the car with a jack.

Yes on the transverse control arm equals A-arm ... what most people in industry would call almost any kind of triangular lower control arm!

And, yes, the point immediately behind the end points for that protection bar for the A/C condensor is where I recommend putting the jack stands.
