Finally figured out how to drive this thing
Only took me a year and a half and maybe 20k miles...but today driving to work I finally began to figure out my sc,
Light traffic heading into the city and I began to sort of zone out on my day ahead and just concentrate on the road and the cars around me. I felt my hands getting looser on the wheel, and just kind of relaxed, anyway the next 15 miles or so I could feel exactly what the car was doing, I was controling it with the gas and moving the car around from lane to lane and through the on and off ramps I travel and it was amazing! I think for a few moments I finally got it! very cool... I came from a 914 most recently and that car also took a while for me to really understand, but the 911 is totally different handling wise, it seems like the envelope is narrower but when you hit it right wow! you can totally control the car and feel what it is doing! Now if we can hold off on snow for a few more weeks.... |

Zoanas is correct. You can spend many years developing your ability to leverage the unique handling characteristics of this car. It's really much more interesting than the 914. 914's simply don't have a weight bias, so their handling is QUICK and neutral. And then when you do spin one, it spins like a top. 911's have a massive weight bias. You can use this to your advantage. 911's get tail-happy real quick. This means you can rotate the car more easily. It also means you can swap ends easily. It also means you can get more traction on throttle as you release from a turn. When the rear kicks out, the motion is much slower than the 914.
Folks who can really make these cars dance are FUN to watch. You should be attending every autocross event you can. Some drivers are able to lift - rotate - grab and shoot. The front is very light, so it's not easy getting traction there. You can use the brakes to mash some brief weight onto the front axle, and then you have very good ability to move the front sideways. There's more. Much more.

I agree,
I autoX-d the 914 and a 968 I had earlier, but I haven't hit the cones or a track in my sc yet. I think this coming summer I will start getting back into it. The 914 was by far the most fun car I have ever had before this one, and to some extent I still think they are pretty hard to beat, but the learning curve on a 911 is so much slower!-and that's part of the fun I think that now I have a better idea of what the car is trying to tell me and how it reacts. The thing I really saw today was that you don't need to/shouldnt drive it with a heavy hand, it's all about feel, and you can really drive it with the throttle. My 914 never had the power to do that, but it also had about 500 fewer lb's to drag around. |
