G50... L/S or peg leg????
Is there anyway to tell whether my car has an L/S unit from the number stampings on the tranny or the VIN????
Thanks in advance.. PS.. Indy F1 pictures coming next week |

Scott,
I think it would be easier just to put the back end up on jack stands, and go make sure the emergency brake is off, and that the trans is in neutral, then go back to the driver's side rear wheel and turn it manually as if the car was moving forward. Look under the car to the other rear wheel and check to see if the other wheel is moving in the same direction, or opposite from the one you are turning. If it is turning in the direction of forward movement, rejoice!!! You HAVE a limited slip! Otherwise, you don't. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Are sure that is the same for later model 911's. My car came from the factory with the limited slip differential option and I'm sure it spins opposite when the wheel is turned as described above. Is the amount of slip a factor in this?

I have been told that a worn-out limited slip will not pass the test, but I've never seen that personally! Even 35-year old Sure-Grip's on Mopars can be tested using that method with complete confidence ...

I don't think a G50 with 59K and no symptoms of problems would qualify as worn out. As to the direction of spin, it is related to the amount of slip at the factory, (40%). Perhaps this circumstance is specific with G50. I would request another owner of an 87 to 89 to try. Whatever, I am planning to put a Quaife in when a do a gear ratio change. Did you see that the new M3 has a fully adjustable rear slip from 0 to 100%. Neat feature.

Uh oh, While I was doing my rear bearings I did the ole move the drive wheel thing and the two axles had no corrolation whatsoever. I mean no drag no movement of the other axle no nothing. What am I looking at here? No symptoms other than strange groan that I think is the one remaning bearing I have yet to replace.
