Webers Synchronized, ZEN !!!!! .... one issue
After tuning and synchronizing my Webers to 90%, a problem still exists with idle surge. I can't get the idle correct because it will not remain stable.
After the car warms up, the idle surges every minute or so. After all that work, it's plenty annoying. The car's a 2.2 E, flowed heads, Webers, no other mods. What are some common culprits for this idle surge issue. Thank you. Rich |

I have found that my car does not idle well when the idle jets and/or needle valve(mixture) are dirty.
Have you pulled them to see if they are still clean? Make sure that you carefully screw them in while counting turns so that you can set them back where they were. I think you will find that freshly cleaned jets will make the carbs very sensitive to adjustment. I would pull the jets and mixture screws one at a time and use carb cleaner/air compressor to clean them. It does wonders. How long has it been since they were pulled from the car and given a good soak cleaning? When I bought my car it hardly ran; rough idle, sputtering, coughting, backfiring, it had it all. I pulled, dismantled, and cleaned both carbs and it made all the difference. My car now has that unmistakable air cooled WWWHHHHIIIIRRRR!!!! What a lovely sound indeed. Additional problems with rough idle could be caused by ignition wires, dist cap, rotor, etc... I hope this helps your problems. Jamie 71 911T targa http://www4.ncsu.edu/~jpnovak |

How is the distributor?
If it is worn; the dwell will vary thus the spark will be inconsistent and can cause idle problems. Put a dwell meter on it at idle; it should be quite stable, maybe fluctuate a deg at most every now and then, but idealy no movment, and defiantly no erratic fluctuations. A faulty fuel pump can cause problems as well and to much fuel pressure. Good luck! I was cursing my Webers on my 2.2 that had a bad idle and it turned out to be the dwell was off! |

In my experience with motorcycle engines a power surge such as you suggest could be caused by an intake leak somewhere around the manifold system or worn shafts or connections around or within the carb itself. try squirting some starting fluid around the outside of the manifolds where they mate oraround the areas where the butterfly shafts run thru the carbs while the engine is running and see iff the surge happens while you do it. Be carefull.
