Wow...carnage....I am very sorry to see and hear!

I used to work at my Uncle's bodyshop and we fixed cars that were way worse than that.

Not sure if that helps.

$4K will prob. cover the actual damage repair but not the paint hopefully no bent chassis and suspension pieces. An excellent re-spray entire car will be an easy $2500-$3000, strip, primer, 3coats base, 4coats clear and then water-sand. So I would budget $8K.

Yasin

This is why my seat is bolted down - Best excuse ever "the car is set up for me - the seat doesn't even move!"
That said - sorry to see the pics of the car. Hopefully all can be fixed.

I'm sorry to see this.

Very unfortunate. If you can fix it yourself, your friend should be bye your side the entire time helping out. If he isn't, then I'd say he wasn't a friend to begin with. Even someone with no mechanics experience can hand tools and beers to you while you work. He might just learn something too.

Crappy situation, but I wouldn't write a true friend off, even if he pissed me off that bad. He was stupid and hopefully he learned from his mistake without paying with his life.

My $.02,
Matt

It's definitely fixable. I would take advantage of the situation and go with a TL conversion.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think 4k would come close to covering that, at least not on the east coast. 4 k would not even cover the complete car re-paint from a decent shop that would be needed to make the car look whole again.

My relatively un-educated guess is

-5-8 k for a re-paint up to Porsche standards

-4-8k in body work

Can the guy who did this report it on his insurance? I'm not sure how that works, but if so he should, you don't want to have this on your record if you can help it.

I have to say; they guy was cool to write you a check.. but I would ask him to provide the rest if it comes to that.. there is this word in the dictionary.. its under the R section.. scroll down..

R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y

Funny thing; if he pays for this and makes it right he will feel so much better about himself. Get a few quotes and let him know when ASAP what its gonna come to so he can prepare himself mentally.. And make sure its made RIGHT.. check the unibody! My guess is if you look in the trunk you might have a krinkle right in front if the strut mount structure.. maybe.

Tell him $4k might cover the paint. He needs to take a loan out if he has no insurance. Small claims court is not where you want this to go but its a possibility..

BTW.. this car is a total.

sorry to see such a tragedy, at least no one was hurt.

I have an 86 coupe right rear quarter that I can cut to your bodyshop specs when the time comes.

I would guess the talk of "small-claims court" and the like is pointless. I'm no lawyer, but I think what any court would conclude is encapsulated in the original poster's very first message: "I made the mistake..."

I would doubt that the guy who crashed the car has any responsibility beyond what he volunteers, since he was willingly and voluntarily given the car to drive, no waiver signed, no financial responsibilities specified.

I had a very simular crash in my SC. Take a VERY close look
in the engine compartment on both sides near/under the fuse
panel and near/under the oil filter. Look for creases or uneveness
in these areas. Also closely look at your rear engine brace by
the fan... that connects to the engine mounts. See if it is straight.
Highly possible that there is a bent frame if you notice anything.
If the frame is OK... you can probably make it out OK.
Good Luck !
Chuck

Wow, I hate to see that. I'm sorry about your car. The guy driving it was careless and irresponsible to the extreme to drive your car that fast. He needs to pay for the whole thing, no matter what! I would assume that if the car was crashed at that rate of speed, that there is lot of damage that isn't immediately obvious that would cost $$$ to fix. Good luck!

BTW, I've never driven anyone else's Porsche and only a select few have driven my car. Anyone driving someone else's car "like they stole it" needs to pay up!!

Side note, any significance to the the screen name? It's commonly used as a reference to some of us who worked for a particular company that went Chp 7.

calling911, it's not a joke at all. I imagine a judge saying, "Did you give this person the unrestricted right to drive your car?"

"Yes, your honor, I told him to take it for a spin and have fun."

"Case dismissed."

A lawyer may well tell me that's not what would happen at all, but it won't be the first time I'm wrong. I'll be interested to hear informed comment, though posters saying, "the guy hasta pay up" mean nothing.

I had a friend land one of my airplanes gear-up once, against which this car's damage is minimal. Circumstances conspired to help cause the accident, he at least paid for a new prop, which costs a lot more than a used 911, and I took care of the rest. He's still a good friend (and a better pilot...).

I think next time I rent a car I'll wad it up and see how that works out for me in a court of law.. but judge, I paid to drive the car! And my idea of driving a car is a spectacular crash! Damn it was fun! Insurance? I didn't want any! No use for it! I do not wish to fix the car! I just wanted to wad it up.. thats what I rented it for! Thanks hertz!

I dont think so... thats just not how any sane judge would interpret someone loaning a car.. check your policy.. you are insured on any car u drive in the united states.. ACCEPT Puerto Rico.. nobody will insure you in Puerto Rico accept Puerto Rico insurance.

My point exactly: wad up the rental agreement and the won't give you the car. That's _why_ they make you sign the agreement taking responsibility.

And what is your expertise in this area, aside from being unable to spell?

Be careful, your level of sophistication is showing.
