felt channel replacement CIS pressure tester
Would someone tell me how to replacethe felt channel on a 1977 coupe? Does the whole window frame come out? Also, does anyone have a list of parts needed to build a CIS pressure tester, or have a place to purchase one cheaper than $150?

JC Whitney used to sell a CIS tester for about $75, complete with gauge, lines, a valve, and a bunch of adapters, one of which worked on my 911. But I don't see it in the current catalog, so maybe these are out of favor.
But maybe one of the guys who has converted his CIS will sell his old one cheap? Walt Fricke |

Here is the link for the JC Whitney unit:

I recently got the tester from JC Whitney and have used it several times very successfully. You'll notice this from the Harbor Freight listing:
"Fits most systems (except for Bosch, CIS-Jetronic and GM throttle body systems)" I don't know if this means it is missing the fittings or what would prevent it from working (it's just a pressure tester), but the $57.99 tester from JC Whitney does indeed work as is out of the box.

The Whitney set-up includes the switching valve to go back and forth in testing both system and control pressure. The HF unit likely will work, but will require some extra steps. I use the Whitney unit. You'll also need the appropriate manual or documentation for your engine to interpret the numbers and properly trouble-shoot.

Brian - likewise! As you see from my low post count, I'm new to the board and to Porsche but I'm getting my head around it (thanks to the vast knowledge on this board).

Hey, Kirk. Congrats and enjoy the ownership experience. SCs are great cars. Good on you for "digging in" on your car's CIS with the right diagnostic gear. Too many guys view CIS as some mysterious bit of magic that can't be understood by mere mortals.

You can pull the whole window frame out. It's a bit of work but not bad at all.Six allen head bolts.
Two on the front top corner of the door under plastic plugs. One inside the door at the bottom and two on the door latch side under plastic plugs. You will have to take the door panel off obviously. Slide the frame out, put in the felt and carefully gide the frame past the window and down into postion. Then re-adjust the angle of the frame in or out to seal nicely with the door seal. And also up and down. You should be able to see a line were it was positioned before. It's actually very easy. Just takes some time.

Is there any sort of sealant needed at the front and rear of the frame where it meets the door? I read something in the Haynes manual about a sealant.

Here is a link to a tester for $105 with a 3-way valve and all the adaptors; it might be like the one that PP offers.

Scroll down here for Tim "Macgyver" Hancock's homemade CIS pressure tester. He can build a 747 out of toothpicks.

The factory put a small bead of black sealent across the very bottom of the vent window, on the inside were it meets the door top.
I did not notice any other areas. It look like the same goop they used to attach the plastic moister barrior.
