Performance Chips

I'm shopping for a performance chip and wanted to see if anyone had any knowledge of which brand has the most noticeable gains. Weltmeister? Auto Authority?

I have an autothority chip in my 3.2. I can't tell you much about other manufacturers. Bruce Anderson recommends them in his book. Don't expect much except for more power at screamin RPM's and a higher rev limit 7500. These come in handy at the track.

The PO of my car put a chip in there. Not sure of the brand. I wonder what it is. But I wonder - are there chips out there that simply remove the rev limit? That would be dangerous. I think I've bumped into one now and again in forays into redline-land...but so far, so good.

I need to pull that DME out and have a look-see.

I think your redline is 6700. For a while, I thought my car did'nt have a limit because I was use to the previous limits. I finally did hit it a few times at my last event. Remember, its the mechanical over revs that are the killers. I had a sales guy at a car shop tell me that 911 engines are run at 10,000 rpm for one hour before installation. Sounded like BS to me for a couple of reasons. It would be a great waste of fuel. Don't think building an engine and then taking it past redline for an hour is good. Has anybody else heard of this?

Zack,

I have a Autothority chip in my '84 Carrera. I am pleased with the chip. Car is stronger (i.e increased torque) in the mid-range rpms and has a "red line" increase of 500 rpm's. I believe the OEM max rpm's were 6350 on my car and the chip's max rpm's are 6850. There is also a "soft" rev limiter. This means that the fuel is gradually shut off as you hit the red line; Autothority says this "soft" limiter is easier on the engine.

The bad news about Autothority chips is they are more expensive than other chips. But as I said before, I am very happy with the Autothority chip.

Regards, Bruce

I hate to ignore the recommendations of Bruce Anderson and the people in this forum but I just ordered the Weltmeister chip. I couldn't find any data for the Authority chip and I liked the claims and HP/Torque graphs in the Performance catalogue. I hope I'm not disapointed. I'll post my thoughts when I put it if anyones interested.

There isn't a 'chip' in ANY SC, because the use an analog, mechanical, continuous-flow injection system!

About the dyno runs at the factory ... both the time and the rpm levels were BS from that salesman's mouth! The time is around a half-hour, the primary purpose is to break the engine in, and the redline is never exceeded ... a very rigorous schedule of continuously changing engine speed up and down the rpm range is used so no 'premature' wear wil occur on the cam lobes!
